It's the most wonderful time of the year! The UVA Cancer Center Annual Wreath Auction is back for the holiday season at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center to spread holiday cheer and support patients throughout the year! UVA Health provides the wreath bases — and staff provide the creativity! Finished wreaths will be auctioned December 2nd - December 8th. For almost 20 years, the wreath auction has helped cancer patients overcome financial barriers to treatment, including meals, transportation and lodging. Tyler Neville, University of Virginia Football player shares his story and the importance of giving the gift of hope this holiday season, whether you are bidding on a wreath or providing a donation. Tyler was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma and persevered through it all. Becker's is proud to announce its 2024 list of hospitals and health systems recognized for excellence in oncology. These institutions have garnered national acclaim for advancing cancer care via their cutting-edge clinical trials and life-changing research. The UVA Cancer Center, recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as Virginia’s first Comprehensive Cancer Center, has grown into a leader in cancer care, research and community outreach. UVA Health is committed to pioneering treatments, including offering Virginia’s first MRI-guided radiation therapy and FDA-approved immunotherapy for small cell lung cancer. Serving over 3.2 million people across 87 counties, the program has seen a 50% increase in patient care volume since 2014 and a nearly 500% rise in research participation, backed by $77 million in annual funding. Recent initiatives include launching outpatient CAR-T therapy, a collaborative cancer screening program with Federally Qualified Health Centers, and groundbreaking research on prostate and nerve sheath cancers. To further address disparities, UVA Health experts have proposed strategies to improve cancer prevention in rural and underserved communities, while expanding nurse-led screening programs. https://lnkd.in/gcYSuXxp

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America, yet only 7% of eligible Virginia residents are screened according to the American Lung Association. The UVA Cancer Center, Appalachian Community Cancer Alliance and BUCHANAN GENERAL HOSPITAL have teamed up to make getting screened for lung cancer easier for residents of rural Virginia and West Virginia. On November 4th, our JEDI team, in collaboration with the Departments of Surgery and Pathology, hosted an exciting community event with the Boys and Girls Club. We had the opportunity to teach the kids valuable life-saving skills, including intubation and CPR. Residents from Surgery and Pathology lead hands-on suturing exercises and helped the children explore the fascinating world of human anatomy. It was a day filled with learning, discovery, and unforgettable experiences for everyone involved! Interested in becoming a faculty member? We’re hiring! https://lnkd.in/gwS9diEZ
