VBASE's high-performance and environmentally friendly hydropower lubricant, Hydro T-EL™, was selected for evaluation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory through a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Water Power Technology Office (WPTO) initiative. With support from the Hydropower Testing Network (HyTN), this program will help advance hydropower technologies by providing access to specialized testing facilities allowing for technology validation in the field. Last week, I had the honor of participating in the Governor's Economic Summit, serving on the panel "Advancing Your Company's Legacy through Innovation, R&D, and Technology." It was a privilege to discuss how R&D and innovation are driving growth and economic development across South Carolina. The conversations highlighted the transformative role that cutting-edge research and advanced technologies play in maintaining competitive advantages for businesses in the state. From fostering sustainability to enabling breakthroughs in emerging industries, R&D is a cornerstone of South Carolina's economic resilience and future prosperity. Zach Hunt, Senior Applications Specialist at VBASE, will present "Surface Interactions and Thermophysical Analysis of API Group II-V Base Oils" as the invited speaker for the January Technical Meeting of the Chicago Section of STLE on Thursday, January 16 in Schaumburg, IL. Lubricants play a crucial role in mechanical systems by reducing friction and wear, enhancing the longevity of components. A key secondary function of lubricants is to transfer heat away from contact surfaces, as high temperatures can exacerbate friction and wear. Efficient wetting of these surfaces is important for minimizing friction and wear while also improving heat dissipation into the lubricant. Zach's presentation will provide an overview of the surface interactions and thermophysical properties of both petroleum-based and synthetic base oils, classified under API Groups II-V. Key measurements to be discussed include volumetric heat capacity, contact angle, and surface tension of various lubricants on different ferrous and non-ferrous substrates. This comprehensive understanding is essential for lubricant formulators aiming to design products optimized for specific applications.
