A nonprofit organization working towards an educated and empowered global veterinary medical cannabis community
About us
Our mission is to create lasting solutions that ensure the safe use of cannabis in pets though education, advocacy and promoting product standards. We are a startup nonprofit comprised of dedicated professionals from around the world who share in the collective vision of 'an educated and empowered global veterinary medical cannabis community.' The current system is confusing and full of pitfalls...veterinarians need education and the confidence to discuss and utilize cannabis, pet parents need accurate information, and corporate manufacturers need clarity and guidance. The Veterinary Cannabis Society seeks to clarify the system to bring the benefits of cannabis to our pets in a legal, safe and efficacious way.

We just learned that Bond Vet has a YouTube podcast series, which is exciting! What's more exciting is how we learned: Dr. Trina was featured in one of their episodes! The topic was, of course, veterinary cannabis. The episode is titled "Turning the Alternative Mainstream." And that's precisely what we're trying to do! Be sure to comment on the video so it gets an algorithmic boost. https://lnkd.in/dRmcrZFX

Our Pack Leader Level sponsor, Evermore Pet Food, has won the Good Chicken Award from Compassion in World Farming! The CIWF Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards acknowledges companies that demonstrate a commitment to improving the welfare of their supply chains. The Good Chicken Award acknowledges Evermore’s Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). The award underscores Evermore's place at the forefront of a broader movement, where demand for sustainable and ethically sourced products continues to rise. By setting such high standards for their meat suppliers, Evermore not only enhances the lives of pets but has now surpassed sourcing commitments within the pet food and human food supply chains. We're so proud of Evermore. They're trailblazers in the pet product community. They're awesome people to work with. And their food is downright tasty (according to humans and pets). Congratulations, Hanna and Alison!

Our friends and sponsors Rooted Owl™/ Animal & Plant Sciences just released a clever new CBD + CBG cat and dog treat! These fish-flavored treats are great for picky eaters and pets with protein or chicken sensitivities. We can't wait to test them on our finnicky kitties! (PS: Rooted Owl's pet treats are human grade. So if you're craving fish and serenity, you can technically chow down alongside Fido. Just sayin'.)

For years there's been discussion amongst veterinarians about the interactions of cannabidiol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). On September 25, the results of a study were published that covered just this topic! Title: Evaluation of the effect of cannabidiol administration with and without nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in dogs with mobility disorders: a prospective, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled study Authors: Bryce Talsma, Lindsay Hochman Elam, Stephanie McGrath, Tianjian Zhou, Craig B. Webb, Felix Michael Duerr (NOTE: Stephanie is an advisor to VCS!) Intro: Introduction: With rapidly growing interest in the use of cannabidiol (CBD) in the management of pain and other conditions, more information is needed on the safety and efficacy of this supplement, particularly its co-administration with commonly used pharmaceuticals such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This study sought to assess the effect of CBD in dogs with mobility impairments, as well as evaluate the clinical tolerance of CBD used together with NSAIDs. Results: Thirty-eight dogs finished the study with thirty-nine included for at least partial analysis. Compared to baseline, dogs receiving CBD showed evidence of improved outcomes based on blinded veterinary assessments and accelerometer data. Compared to placebo, dogs receiving CBD showed some evidence of improved outcomes on CBPI, CSOM, and blinded veterinary assessments, but not for objective outcome measures. There was evidence of increased ALP when CBD was co-administered with NSAIDs compared to CBD administration alone. Additionally, there was evidence of ALT elevations with CBD and NSAID co-administration, but this elevation did not show evidence of an increase over CBD use alone. You can read the full study on Frontiers in Veterinary Science. What do you think about these results? Will they affect your pets' treatment plans?

Our Board Member, Dr. Elena Battaglia, is proud to call the authors of this study her colleagues and friends! Even as the Italian government continues to threaten restrictions on cannabis and CBD, Dr. Elena and her colleagues remain dedicated to its study and application. They're veterinary heroes! Title: Pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety of cannabidiol in dogs: an update of current knowledge Date: June 2023 Authors: Alessandra Di Salvo, Maria Beatrice Conti, Giorgia della Rocca Summary: "Despite a certain number of available pharmacokinetic studies, the kinetic profile of CBD has yet to be fully known, probably because of the very different experimental conditions. In terms of efficacy, most studies have tested CBD’ ability to relieve osteoarthritic pain. In contrast, few studies have evaluated its role in epilepsy, behavioral disorders, and skin lesions. From obtained results, some evidence exists supporting the beneficial role of CBD. Nevertheless, the limited number of published studies and the occurrence of bias in almost all require caution in interpreting findings. From tolerability studies, CBD’ side effects can be classified as mild or unremarkable. However, studies were prevalently focused on short- to medium-term treatment, while CBD is usually employed for long-term treatment. Further studies are warranted to define better whether CBD could be a valid adjunct in canine treatment." Find the full study in our Curated Research Library and Frontiers in Veterinary Medicine!
