🙌 This year, promotoras transformed communities, built bridges 🌉, paved new paths 🚀, and planted seeds of transformation 🌱 for a more just and equitable future. Each month, we highlighted promotora's servicio de corazón and the Promotora Model for Community Transformation with monthly graphic design themes. This is a small tribute to the huge impact promotoras create for community well-being and health equity. We are deeply grateful to every promotora, promotor, ally, and community leader who, with servicio de corazón ❤️ and unwavering dedication, will continue to build a world where health, dignity, and equity are a reality for all. Let’s move forward into 2025 with strength 💪, unity 🤝, and hope! ¡Hacia vidas dignas y sanas! 🌈

Hacia una Vida Digna y Sana Towards a Dignified and Healthy Life
About us
Established in 2000, Visión y Compromiso (VyC) is dedicated to improving the health and well being of under resourced and underrepresented communities by providing support, training and leadership development to promotoras and other grassroots community leaders (collectively referred to herein as “promotores”) throughout California. At the center of VyC’s programs is the promotor model, a model for community transformation accepted among Latino communities (The Promotor Model: A Framing Paper, 2011). Promotores develop trusting relationships and share personal experiences, information and resources in culturally and linguistically relevant ways drawing from people’s own strengths in order to transform their communities into healthier, more vibrant places for all families to live, work and play. Trusted community members, they are natural leaders – “go to” people in their neighborhoods – who are characterized by their servicio de corazón (heartfelt service). They share the ethnicity, language, cultural traditions, socioeconomic status, and life experiences of the communities they serve and provide information, resources and culturally and linguistically relevant outreach and education. Promotores may be paid staff or volunteer community workers and are known by many titles (e.g., peer educator, community health worker, community educator, outreach worker, systems navigator, patient liaison); they are expert at promoting changes in life-long health habits. With decades of experience engaging “hard to reach” residents, promotores are first-responders serving immigrant and undocumented communities, migrant workers, homebound seniors, childcare providers, etc.

✨🌎 Today, we reflect on the stories of resilience, courage, and hope of migrants seeking a better future. We also celebrate community workers and promotoras who, with their servicio de corazón, work tirelessly to provide essential support and resources to migrant children. Among them, Cruz Marquez from Orlando, Florida, who worked as a Youth Care Worker at shelters in El Paso and Carrizo Springs from May 2022 to December 2023. During that time, Cruz had the privilege of assisting thousands of girls, boys, and young people while they waited to be reunited with their families. 📝 Cruz Marquez fondly remembers a 16-year-old Nicaraguan boy who arrived at the shelter unable to read or write. Despite their short time together, this young man full of potential learned to write and spell his name. 🌟 “It was an enriching experience to help these children and young people on their journey. Many of them risk their lives to achieve the dream of a better future. The important thing is to provide them with tools that allow them to make their way in this country of opportunities.” On this day, we honor migrants and those who accompany them and provide them with tools of empowerment. 💙

🌟 Amplifying the voices of promotoras who inspire change! Promotoras like Noemí Guardado Campos in Tulare, CA, achieve remarkable transformations for their families and communities. We’re excited to share her journey: "I joined a Bailoterapia group because I have always been very active. 💃 But I found so much more. The instructor discovered it in me. Before, I didn't know I was a promotora."🌱 "The instructor encouraged me to attend Visión y Compromiso training. She described the capabilities she already saw in me and trusted me to complete the training for child care providers. And I did. Although initially only interested in CPR certification, I gained much more. 🏅 Visión y Compromiso training has created a new and better version of myself. All the information opens our minds and makes us grow intellectually, as people, and as human beings. It makes me very happy. 😊✨" Promotoras are transforming families and communities: one voice, one story at a time. 📢❤️ Thanks for supporting them, and let's continue amplifying and celebrating their stories of #TransformaciónComunitaria! 🎉

And when ESEs succeed, they create a ripple effect that benefits communities, opening doors to stability, economic mobility, and possibility! A big thank you to the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom for approving the nation's first statewide investment in ESEs, the California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA) for their partnership, and Lendistry for serving as fiscal agent.
