Voices of Colour

Civic and Social Organizations

A research and community action organisation addressing systemic inequities and amplifying the voices of communities.

About us

Voices of Colour is a research and community action organisation that addresses systemic inequities and provides a platform to amplify the voices of POC. We deliver mentoring and community research programmes, with a focus on co-designing spaces with the communities that we support. The platform we provide is the beginning of a journey to create more meaningful conversations and change around issues that are impacting communities. It’s a space to bring these communities together to initiate that change and re-imagine spaces where they feel heard.

Updates

  • In 2023-24, the Telescope team, in partnership with Voices of Colour and Flank, designed and delivered a new Community Resource Strategy for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The Strategy aimed to take stock of the Council’s current community assets, such as libraries, community centres, and cultural centres, and set a direction for how those could be better used to support the voluntary and community sector (VCS). How communities lived experience is centred when designing crucial community spaces, provisions and services is an area that requires the space to be better understood. Communities are at the heart of everything and this project emphasised continuously how forms of community engagement needs to be better. Read more about the project here - https://bit.ly/3yDKEeK

It's been a hot minute...but we're back with our latest blog! 👋 Based on our experience working with Royal Borough of Greenwich designing Community Resource strategy, we've put together some of our learnings on how we might approach co-design in Council projects going forward. Have a read here: https://lnkd.in/ee_Usx7P Thanks to Voices of Colour and Flank (CJ Tayeh) for all your work on the project, and input to this piece!

Over the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a group of amazing South Asian women that have co-led on a project exploring the impact of the pandemic and the current health inequalities that exist. As part of this work, Voices of Colour & Expert By Experience launched a series of Chai and Chat sessions across the Borough of Ealing. These spaces have been integral in bringing together different communities of South Asian women in their local areas to share, discuss and learn from one another’s journeys. As a result of this work, we had the privilege to interview a series of South Asian women that have shared their experiences of health, community, and the joy they have found in creating a space for themselves. This led to co-publishing the “Experiences of South Asian Women – Stories of Health, Community and Joy” that shines a spotlight on women, from a range of linguistic and faith backgrounds and their relationship with their health, wellbeing and what community joy has meant to them. Also, as someone who has grown up in Southall, the lack of similar spaces to share, learn and support one another has an impact. There is the acknowledgement of needing to continuously resource this space to ensure that this work is sustainable and has a long-term impact on communities we work with. There has been many learnings throughout this process, which we will share soon. This work we led was part of the Living Roots project led by Megan Schmidt-Sane, PhD and the team at Institute of Development Studies. A huge thank you to Megan and the amazing IDS team for all the support! If any libraries, community spaces and/or community-led organisations would be interested in keeping a copy, please do contact our team at - hello@voicesofcolour.org.

  • We have had the opportunity to lead this project with Expert By Experience that has focused on delving deeper into the impact of the pandemic on health inequalities experienced by South Asian Women. Our Chai & Chat sessions were launched across the Borough of Ealing to create safe spaces for South Asian women to share their experiences of health, community and joy. These spaces have been integral in bringing together different communities of South Asian women in their local areas to share, discuss and learn from one another’s journeys. As part of this work, we co-published the “Experiences of South Asian Women – Stories of Health, Community and Joy” that shines a spotlight on women, from a range of linguistic and faith backgrounds and their relationship with their health and wellbeing. This work has been part of the Living Roots project led by Institute of Development Studies that also involved Ealing Council, NHS Northwest London, Southall Community Alliance & The Young Foundation. We are looking to provide copies of the book to libraries, community spaces and organisations that would be interested in keeping a copy. If you know of any organisations that would like a copy, please do contact our team at – hello@voicesofcolour.org
