  • 👓 Bridging Generational Gaps in Volunteering Fred has been a dedicated volunteer for over a decade, spending countless hours cooking meals for the homeless and supporting his community with warmth and compassion. At 71, Fred is an “old-school” communicator—no emails, no digital forms, just face-to-face connection. But one day, while serving food on his shift, Fred had an accident that caused his glasses to break. Given his years of service, he thought it was fair to ask the organisation for help with replacing them. However, when Fred approached his young coordinator to request reimbursement, things didn’t go as planned. Fred was asked to email a claim form, something he’d never been comfortable with. Frustrated by the process, he made his case verbally, but the coordinator, equally frustrated, insisted on the email. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a heated exchange that left both sides feeling misunderstood. That’s when Voluntas Conflict Resolution Supporters stepped in. Our trained CRS facilitators arranged a three-way conversation between Fred, the coordinator, and the CEO of the organisation. Setting ground rules for respectful communication, we provided a safe space for each person to share their perspective openly. Fred expressed his frustration with the claims process, while the coordinator shared the challenges of managing requests in a digital system. The CEO recognised Fred’s years of dedication and the true value he brought to the community. With guidance from Voluntas, they found a resolution that preserved everyone’s dignity: the CEO agreed to cover Fred’s glasses on a one-time basis, acknowledging his years of service without setting a binding precedent. The coordinator and Fred even agreed to meet monthly, allowing them to build rapport and better understand each other’s communication preferences. As a bonus, Fred agreed to learn how to send text messages—an unexpected step toward digital communication, with the coordinator’s support. This resolution not only met Fred’s immediate need but also laid the foundation for mutual respect and collaboration across generations. At Voluntas, we help organisations bridge generational gaps in volunteer teams, ensuring every volunteer feels heard and valued. 💬 Has your organisation faced similar challenges? • 🌊 Turning Tension into Teamwork 🐬 When a new manager stepped in to lead a volunteer-run community organisation, change was in the air—and not everyone was on board. The volunteers, who had run things their way for years, suddenly found their routines disrupted. Frustrations grew, and some volunteers even questioned their future with the organisation. The new manager, sensing the tension, reached out for help in bridging the gap with the team. That’s where Voluntas stepped in. We organised a facilitated meeting at a local surf club, providing a safe and respectful space for the volunteers to share their concerns openly. Before the conversation began, Voluntas set clear ground rules on how the meeting would run, including guidelines on respectful behaviour from all participants. The manager listened with respect, acknowledging the volunteers’ commitment and expertise, while explaining why changes were necessary for the organisation's sustainability. This honest conversation turned tension into relief, and by the end, both sides agreed to work together on a new set of procedures that valued everyone’s input. As they left the meeting, a pod of dolphins appeared, dancing in the waves—a moment that the group took as a perfect symbol of harmony restored. 🐬 At Voluntas, we know that leadership transitions can be challenging for volunteer organisations. But with the right support, these transitions can strengthen, rather than strain, your team. 🔗 Learn more about how we support volunteer teams: www.voluntas.com.au #VolunteerManagement #ConflictResolution #CommunitySupport #Collaboration #Philanthropy

  • 🔑 Why Conflict Resolution is Essential for Volunteer Retention Volunteers are the backbone of the nonprofit sector, and ensuring they feel valued and supported is key to keeping them engaged. Here are four reasons why conflict resolution is crucial for retaining your volunteer team: 1️⃣ Reduces Stress and Burnout: Unresolved conflicts can cause stress and burnout, leading volunteers to leave their roles. By addressing issues early, organisations can create a supportive environment where volunteers feel heard and valued. 2️⃣ Fosters Trust and Communication: Conflict resolution helps open up channels of communication, fostering trust between volunteers and their managers. When volunteers know their concerns will be addressed fairly, they are more likely to stay committed. 3️⃣ Promotes Teamwork and Collaboration: Resolving conflicts effectively encourages teamwork and collaboration. Volunteers who work well together are more likely to stay engaged and perform better. 4️⃣ Boosts Volunteer Satisfaction: Volunteers who experience positive conflict resolution feel more satisfied with their roles. This sense of fulfillment can be a key factor in long-term retention. 📈 Want to improve your volunteer retention?
