In the spirit of gratitude, we thank all the supporters, partners, and sponsors who provided relief efforts to the communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. 🙏 Mere hours after the hurricane subsided, the VOA team came together to assemble essential resources for the 100+ residents we serve in Asheville so they could continue receiving the highest quality of care. Thank you for being part of our work to build #healthycommunities4all. About us
At Volunteers of America, we are more than a nonprofit organization. We are a ministry of service that includes 16,000 paid, professional employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Through our hundreds of human service programs, including housing and healthcare, Volunteers of America touches the lives of 1.5 million people in over 400 communities in 46 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico each year. Since 1896, we have supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including veterans, at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men and women returning from prison, homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart — and ultimately the spirit — of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services. Approximately 60,000 volunteers throughout the country help our employees deliver these life-changing services

Last week, our staff set up a Thanksgiving dinner for 100+ seniors and people with disabilities in Asheville, North Carolina. After Hurricane Helene devastated the area – damaging infrastructure, contaminating water, and interrupting cell service – the residents we serve found reprieve at our gratitude celebration. Our Chief Ministry Officer James A. Marshall, Jr. led a service for the group before everyone was treated with a feast. Thank you to the many hands who helped us give back to those in need this Thanksgiving 🦃

Meet Martin and Gladys, two lovebirds who moved from NYC to North Carolina to be closer to family after Martin’s retirement from the U.S. Marines. After the living arrangement fell through, they were relocated back to NYC without a plan and a place to live. They were then connected to the life-changing services of Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s Support Services for Veteran Families program. Now, Martin and Gladys are living safe and secure in their one-bedroom apartment ready for the holiday season. Learn more about their journey: https://lnkd.in/exd8qpmJ

Giving back to our community is central to VOA’s mission. That’s why we are working with AmeriCorps on our Determined Health initiative to train community health workers in multiple states and Puerto Rico. These trusted community members are empowered to advocate for people in need and help them reach their full potential. As volunteerism rises after the pandemic, VOA has been able to level health inequalities in the communities we serve and build #healthycommunities4all.
A note from AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith: The latest data from our Volunteering and Civic Life in America research found that 75.7 million Americans formally volunteered through an organization between September 2022 and September 2023. A whopping 28.3% of the U.S. population served an estimated 4.99 billion hours, showing that volunteering and community engagement is rebounding post-pandemic. I’m grateful to our partners, U.S. Census Bureau, for collaborating with us to track this renewal of service across the country, while considering new frontiers of service like virtual volunteering.
