⚡ 💡 Looking for insights on AI and democracy, the landmark UN #GlobalDigitalCompact, and research amplifying #GlobalSouth voices on #AI? 📽️ Recording now available for our Women in AI Ethics™ panel for the United Nations' recent Summit of theFuture! I was delighted to join two members of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Artificial Intelligence, Jimena Viveros LL.M. and Anna Abramova, sharing insights into the Board's 'Governing AI for Humanity Report' which informed the Global Digital Compact, and Ayca Ariyoruk speaking on democratic AI. All expertly facilitated by Mia Shah-Dand, as always. 🌍 On the panel, I give an overview of the #GlobalDigitalCompact (useful if you need a quick primer!) and its implications for Global South inclusion. 🚀 I also mention the research I've been leading for CARE International UK in collaboration with Accenture, 'AI and the Global South: The Role of Civil Society in AI Decision-Making' - now published! ⤵️ See the comments for links to our AI and the Global South research, and to the Women in AI Ethics™ webinar recording. #ResponsibleAI #InclusiveAI #AIEthics #AI #ArtificialIntelligence

Driving Human-Centered AI Policy for Ethical Innovation and Education | Building Collaborative Teams and Strategic Partnerships for Global Impact *views are my own unless you want them*

The recording from the Women in AI Ethics™ webinar on the 'United Nations Summit of the Future' is now available! The event featured great insights from the two members of the High-level Advisory Board on Artificial Intelligence who contributed to the Governing AI For Humanity report: 🔉 Jimena Viveros LL.M. Head-Legal Adviser and Chief of Staff of Justice Loretta Ortiz Ahlf, #Mexican Supreme Court of Justice, 🔉 Anna Abramova, Director of #Moscow State Institute of International Relations Center for AI, as well as from: 🔉 Suzy Madigan, Responsible AI Lead, CARE International in the #UK. 🙏🏽 A huge thanks to 🙏🏽 Mia Shah-Dand, founder of Women in AI Ethics for organizing and moderating. My take including some of the recommendations submitted by the Center for AI and Digital Policy to the UN: InclusiveGovernance ✔ A conversation on global AI governance can be inclusive - even with participation from 'nondemocracies', which make up the majority of the UN membership. Civil society that lack a voice in their home countries, can find a platform in New York. The Governing for AI Humanity report alone was a product of extensive consultations including 2,000 individuals, across all regions, 250+ written submissions, and 150+ organizations. Science 👏🏽 A crucial recommendation is the establishment of an International Scientific Panel on AI. We need clarity on AI systems and their relationships with scientific inquiry. Which systems fail to stand scrutiny? If a system can't be explained, how is it scientifically valid? HumanRights ⏱ Time is ticking. The UN should appoint a Special Rapporteur on AI and Human Rights to ensure human rights are not sidelined including at the new Scientific Panel to be created. Technical standards alone without a moral compass centered on human rights will be a bridge to nowhere. Conversations on #Risk should reflect common values. This role is also an opportunity to streamline the work of over 100 UN Special Rapporteurs across different thematic areas. Security 🛑 Congrats for not shying away from AI use in the military and calling for "clear red lines delineating unlawful use cases, including relying on AI to select and engage targets autonomously." SustainableDevelopment ❔ When it comes to AI, does the US resemble a developing country? If so, what does that mean for its relationship with the 'Global South?' (Just like during the Industrial Revolution, the US is highly dependent on resources with a negative impact on the environment, pursuing growth at all costs, with growing infrastructure needs.) 📌 For those who missed the event, the link to the webinar and Governing AI for Humanity report are provided in the comments.

Nothing gives me more happiness and cause for optimism than meeting one of my favorite human beings on this planet, Women in AI Ethics™ Advisor, and my sister from another mother Merve Hickok in Istanbul at the 6th International Women and Justice Summit on "Artificial Intelligence and Women.” It took nearly 5years but it was worth the wait 😅

🎙️ I had 2 inspiring conversations w/ IBM partner - Isabel Gomez Vidal, Chief Revenue Officer at Dun & Bradstreet. For those who haven't met Isabel in person, she has a powerful presence such that when she enters a room, the vibe shifts and you feel instantly energized! 🔥 In our first "official" chat, (we'll post the recording online shortly), Isabel shared many gems and here are my high-level takeaways: - Her entrepreneurial passion is the driving force behind her hugely successful executive roles at small and large companies. - Her career journey started at a very young age when she moved overseas for new opportunities despite her broken English. - Her leadership style is values-driven, and she is a pioneer who saw the potential of AI & Data long before anyone else did. - Shared organizational values brought together IBM and Dun & Bradstreet for a partnership that focuses on transparency and demystifying AI black boxes. - She is on the board of The Posse Foundation which helps marginalized communities get access to new opportunities. - Like Ritika Gunnar shared earlier today, Isabel stressed the importance of curiosity and taking the leap, to reinvent your career in AI/tech. In the longer unofficial chat, we discussed ways in which we can get more women into leadership roles at large tech companies. Let's get real, women are 1/3 of the tech workforce but they are barely a fraction in C-level roles at top 100 tech companies. It's not lack of talent that's holding us back but lack of access to opportunity and we are determined to address the access gap. We talked about the power of network and solidarity to elevate more talented women into decision-making roles. More on this shortly.😅 Women in AI Ethics™ #IBMPartner #AI #GenAI #responsibleai #aiethics #IBM #sponsored #womeninAI #womenintech

☀️ I started my day bright and early at 8am at IBM's brand new HQ on Madison Ave in New York City (cue coffee ☕ ). The highlight of my morning was a conversation with Ritika Gunnar, General Manager, Data & AI at IBM who is woman leader with an engineering degree in a high-level leadership role at a leading tech company. I am not a morning person but our chat woke me up!!🔥 We'll post the recording online in a few but I enjoyed hearing about her journey, sage advice for women want to start their career in AI or transition into tech leadership role, and other tips on reinventing yourself for the AI age. Lots of gems and sharing a few here: - Focus on the 3 Cs - Curiosity, (find your) Community, Continuous learning. - You can't be what you can't see - it's critical to have diverse role models. - She was inspired by her daughter's experience with coding camps and importance of having (tech) spaces where girls can thrive. - Unique culture at IBM, which recognizes the contributions of women and this is reflected in their ability to retain women longer than many of their tech peers. (Ritika has been at IBM for nearly 2 decades with a brief stint at Google) I will share more as the day progresses 😅 Women in AI Ethics™ #IBMPartner #AI #GenAI #IBM #sponsored #womeninAI #womenintech
