Congratulations to our Public Safety IT Architect, J. Compton! Compton was ceremonially sworn in as a member of the North Carolina 911 Board at his first meeting on Friday. Governor Josh Stein appointed him to the NC 911 Board representing North Carolina NENA (The 911 Association) earlier in January. The North Carolina General Assembly created the NC 911 Board in January 2008 for the purpose of administering laws and policies related to 911 services & fees including the management, oversight, and monitoring of the administration of 911 service fees to the state’s Public Safety Answering Points. As a member of the ECC Management Team, Compton helps manage the agency’s eight-seat 911 Emergency Communications Center (ECC) along with other duties.

Training in action! Recently, Sgt. Main instructed members of our office and members of the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg on the proper handling and operation of ATVs. Ensuring our teams are prepared for any terrain is key to safety and mission success. Great work, Sgt. Main, for sharing your expertise and strengthening partnerships along the way!

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is pleased that Alder Alfonso Marin-Sotelo has been successfully extradited back to the United States. We thank the U.S. Department of Justice and every agency involved in bringing him back following his arrest by Mexican authorities in May 2023. On August 23, 2022, Marin-Sotelo was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder following the August 11, 2022, death of Deputy Ned Byrd. “Deputy Byrd was one of our own, and we have never stopped working to ensure justice is served,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said. “This extradition is a testament to the determination and collaboration of law enforcement agencies at the state, local, and federal levels. We are grateful for their efforts and remain committed to seeing this case through.” Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said, “The return of Mr. Marin-Sotelo to the United States now allows us to move forward with this case and set a trial date. We are grateful for the cross-agency collaboration that brought him back to face these charges. We know this is a case of significant importance to our community, and our thoughts remain with Deputy Byrd’s family and friends.” We hope this brings a measure of closure to Deputy Byrd’s family, friends, and colleagues who continue to honor his memory. 17 men and women have been arrested as part of a multi-jurisdictional operation targeting drug traffickers. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies, conducted a large-scale operation targeting drug traffickers operating in our county. The operation resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of illegal narcotics and firearms. This joint effort involved the cooperation of the Drug Enforcement Administration, US Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, State Bureau of Investigation, Wake County District Attorney’s Office, Raleigh Police Department, Wake Forest Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Henderson Police Department. “Our deputies and investigators remain committed to holding repeat offenders accountable and keeping dangerous drugs off our streets,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said. “This operation is another example of the hard work and dedication of our team. We are thankful for our partnering law enforcement agencies for helping us pursue those who jeopardize the safety of our communities.” This is an ongoing investigation.

Sheriff Willie Rowe, Sgt. J. Collado, and Deputy A. Garcia were honored at the statewide CIT Conference last week! Sheriff Rowe was selected as the Outstanding Law Enforcement Executive of the Year. Sgt. Collado (not pictured) and Deputy Garcia were selected as CIT Officers of the Year. Over the summer, Deputy Garcia was called to check on the welfare of a juvenile sitting on a bridge over a river in Wake County. While he was talking to the teenager, Sgt. Collado, who was off duty, happened to drive by and stopped to assist. The two deputies talked to the teen, and in time, he slowly climbed off the edge of the bridge. Thank you, NAMI North Carolina and the CIT Conference Planning Committee, for recognizing our agency and the work we do to ensure commitment to public safety and a compassionate response to a person in crisis.
