In coastal California, nature and architecture come together to create a modern interpretation of a weathered Mediterranean villa. Envisioned as a soulful retreat, the home exists in harmony with the landscape. “We worked to develop a design that brings the outside in, creating a home that feels at ease in the coastal landscape,” Associate Principal Amadeo Bennetta says. "I'd take a cocktail with my toes in the sand and a stunning sunset, over a crowded city bar any day. And Rosewood Kona Village's Shipwreck Bar nails it." — Maria Diego, Diego Travel The travel advisors at Travel + Leisure Co. recently included Shipwreck Bar at Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort on their “10 of the Best Bars Around the World” list. Much like the resort itself, the bar has a colorful history. In the early 1960s, the resort’s founders Johnno and Helen Jackson sailed their boat—the “New Moon”—to Hawaii. When they started building Kona Village, they anchored the schooner in the nearby Kahuwai Bay. During a routine cleaning, the boat sank. Efforts were made to bring it back to the surface with inner tubes, but it was destroyed in the salvage attempt. Soon thereafter, its remains were turned into the Shipwreck Bar. More than half a century later, the "New Moon" has been restored, and its legacy lives on at Kona Village. In Hawaiian culture, kuleana refers to the reciprocal relationship between a person, what it is they choose to care for and protect, and the shared benefit or return from that relationship. It is a word we hear often at Walker Warner, as it is deeply ingrained in the projects we design and the way we see the world. Earlier this fall, Partner Greg Warner kicked off the Monterey Design Conference with his talk, “Kuleana: Exploring the Design Ethos of Walker Warner,” hosted by AIA Monterey Bay. In the presentation, he discusses his childhood in Hawaii, early inspirations, and how kuleana has shaped his work over the past 35 years.
