Huge congratulations to Christina Walker, a second-year student in our 3-2 MSW program, on winning an Innovation Award at the Fall 2024 Skandalaris Venture Competition for her business pitch, 4 Her Sport! This mental health platform, designed to empower and support female athletes, earned her a $3,500 prize and recognition as one of four ventures selected for Innovator funding.
Mustafa Rfat a PhD candidate in social work at the Brown School, has co-authored a correspondence in The Lancet. It highlights the importance of greater economic integration for refugees and asylees with disabilities.
Congratulations to Professor Sean Joe for being named a 2024-2025 Institute for Economic Equity research fellow by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis! As one of nine scholars selected for the cohort, he’ll conduct in-residence research focused on promoting economic inclusion and addressing systemic barriers to equity.
Professor Timothy McBride has plenty to celebrate! He was recently honored with the 2024 Rural Excellence in Advocacy Award by the Missouri Rural Health Association (MRHA), recognizing his outstanding contributions to healthcare in rural Missouri. In November, he also hit a significant career milestone—30 years of service with the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) Health Panel, which provides expert advice on rural health issues to Congress and other policymakers.
Professor Leopoldo J. Cabassa has been selected to present the 2025 Aaron Rosen Lecture at the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Annual Conference in Seattle this January. 🙌 #SSWR2025
Kudos to Associate Professor Cal Halvorsen on being awarded a visiting scholar grant to spend 10 weeks at the renowned Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in summer 2025.
Well done! Assistant Professor Tyriesa (Ty) Howard, PhD has received a 2024 Changemakers in Family Planning grant from the Society of Family Planning! The $84,000 grant will support her research project, which examines the impact of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision on adolescents and young adults’ autonomy over their bodies.
Congratulations to Assistant Professor Husain Lateef on receiving a two-year $49,821 grant from the Brady Education Foundation! The funding will support his research on the influences of Afrocentric cultural strengths in Black youth education.
