United as one powerful force, Waterkeeper Alliance fights for everyone's right to drinkable, fishable, swimmable water.

About us

The Waterkeeper movement was started by a band of blue-collar fishermen on New York’s Hudson River in 1966. Their tough, grassroots brand of environmental activism sparked the river’s miraculous recovery and inspired others to launch local Waterkeeper groups around the world. Today, Waterkeeper Alliance unites more than 300 Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates that are on the frontlines of the global water crisis, patrolling and protecting more than 2.5 million square miles of rivers, lakes and coastal waterways on six continents. Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates defend the fundamental human right to drinkable, fishable, and swimmable waters from the Great Lakes to the Himalayas, and combine firsthand knowledge of their waterways with an unwavering commitment to the rights of their communities. Whether they’re on the water tracking down polluters, in courtrooms enforcing environmental laws, advocating in town meetings or teaching in classrooms, the Waterkeeper movement speaks for the waters it defends with the backing of local communities. Waterkeeper Alliance ensures that the world’s Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates are as connected to each other as they are to their local waters, organizing the fight for clean water into a coordinated global movement.

  • Cheers to Chelsea McDonald, our Clean Water Defense Campaign Manager, who represented our movement at the United Nations today, calling for action on toxic water pollutants! Waterkeeper Alliance was one of five civil society groups speaking at the preparatory session for the 2026 UN Water Conference, which will focus on accelerating SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation for all. Co-hosted by Senegal and the UAE, the conference will bring together governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to tackle global water challenges and drive collective action. It will focus on innovative solutions, gender equality, and empowering women and girls in water access. The event, set for December 2–4, 2026, will produce an outcome document to guide global progress. #CleanWater #cleanwaterforall #unwater2026 #sdg6 #globalaction #collectiveaction

  • There's still time to act! This afternoon's anticipated House floor vote on the Waste Emissions Charge CRA is a crucial moment for our planet. 77+ environmental orgs, including Waterkeeper Alliance and many Waterkeeper groups, have sent a letter to Congress urging opposition to this dangerous rollback of the methane polluter fee. Read the letter here: bit.ly/3QxtPaS We need YOUR help NOW to contact your representatives and make sure they vote NO on the WEC CRA today. The methane polluter fee is a proven, cost-effective solution to reduce energy waste and protect public health. Rolling it back would: ➡️ Increase energy waste ➡️ Create uncertainty for operators ➡️ Harm public health ➡️ Undermine U.S. global leadership in fighting methane pollution When calling or emailing their offices, please consider this language: "I’m calling/writing to urge Representative [NAME] to oppose efforts to weaken the methane polluter fee. Rolling back this commonsense measure would increase methane waste, harming both the environment and the economy. Keeping the fee in place prevents needless energy waste, creates jobs, and strengthens U.S. energy security. This issue has long enjoyed bipartisan support, and I hope the Representative will stand with voters in protecting clean air, water, and U.S. energy efficiency." Every call and email counts—just one action from you could make a difference today in keeping this vital rule in place and protecting our future.

  • Cheers to California Coastkeeper Alliance for their incredible work to #ProtectCAWater! And a huge thank you to Ben Allen for introducing the Right to Clean Water Act and prioritizing #cleanwaterforall. California Coastkeeper Alliance partnered with Senator Allen and Defenders of Wildlife to introduce this landmark legislation that will uphold 50 years of clean water protections that California had before the 2023 Supreme Court Sackett v. EPA decision. With federal rollbacks accelerating, this action ensures #California’s waters will be safeguarded for future generations. Artwork courtesy of California Coastkeeper Alliance.

  • The White House has issued an Executive Order announcing that it is “the policy of the United States to end the use of paper straws.” This isn’t just about paper vs. plastic. It’s about stopping the widespread environmental and ecological harm caused by #singleuseplastic. Plastic straws are among the top 10 contributors to marine debris worldwide, and many recycling systems can’t process them due to their size. Over 7 states and dozens of cities have passed laws to reduce plastic straw pollution because it’s a simple, tangible way for everyone to help with the global plastics crisis. This fight is about much more than straws—it’s about reducing wasteful plastic use to protect our waterways—and we must stay focused on real solutions. Waterkeeper groups across the globe are leading the fight against #plasticpollution. 👉 Find your local Waterkeeper and discover ways to get involved in protecting your community’s waterways. https://lnkd.in/ghXfcdcW
