Today is International Mountain Day! This year’s theme is “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation, youth and beyond”, and Waterwise fits right in! Managing water basins is becoming increasingly strategic at a political level, as water is central to key economic sectors of the Alpine and Perialpine regions: energy production, agriculture, industry, tourism. Water resources though are threatened by multiple consequences of climate change, such as: glacier melting, snowcover reduction, change in precipitations and heatwaves that affect all the Alpine region. Waterwise aims to support local administrators, protected area managers, and Alpine communities in co-designing long-term strategies to enhance these regions’ resilience, particularly regarding their water resources, dealing with climate change. Waterwise is an Interreg Alpine Space with activities taking place in seven countries and many different testing sites and deployment sites. In this map designed by Tom Darbon from Tetraktys ONG, NGO part of the project partnership, the variety of environments and socio-economic situations is visible at a glance. Local communities in seven pilot sites will be involved in co-designing and testing the digital toolbox expected as output of the project. It’s a wrap on the Waterwise kickoff meeting! The 12 Waterwise partners met in Poschiavo, Switzerland, over the past three days. Discussions were held about the project activities, sharing ideas and good practices coming from 7 different countries. The project partners had the opportunity to better get to know each other and everyone’s role in the project over formal and informal discussions. The whole team was happy to join in a walk close to one of the project pilot sites and learn how to collect samples from water streams for future tests. Everyone was amazed by the beauty of the Cambrena glacier and its lake! Thank you to Université de Neuchâtel and Fondazione Edmund Mach who perfectly organized the kickoff meeting, and to Cassiano Luminati from Polo Poschiavo, Alexis TRUCHET from Interreg Alpine Space Joint Secretariat, Silvia Jost and Alexis Kessler, both from the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development (Ufficio federale dello sviluppo territoriale ARE), for participating: their presentations gave plenty of ideas to the Waterwise team for future connections with other projects and institutions.
