Architecturally Speaking: November Topic: Hunter Xci Foil Class A Description: Xci Foil Class A is an energy efficient rigid insulation panel composed of a closed cell Class A polyisocyanurate foam core manufactured on-line to 15 mil reinforced foil facers on both sides. This panel comes in 4′ x 8′ panels in thickness of 1″ to 4″ and has an R-value of 6.3 per inch. This panel has been tested to meet air and water barrier requirements to provide all-in-one functionality when seams and penetrations are treated with approved materials. Watkins Concrete Block Company, Inc. was incorporated in 1946 manufacturing only a handful of concrete block items. Today, Watkins is part of a network of block manufacturers throughout the state owned by NEBCO, Inc. of Lincoln. Watkins manufactures over 1300 items in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors for the construction industry. Watkins expanded its product line in with clay brick, manufactured and natural stone, glass block, and many other residential and commercial construction products. All products are displayed at the showroom at 14306 Giles Road. Watkins is open to the public and accepts major credit cards. The landscape market has taken Watkins in a new direction, supplying concrete pavers, Anchor retaining wall block and natural stone. Many other accessories are available for the do-it-yourselfer or the landscape contractor such as cleaners, sealers, tools and caulk. Watkins has an outdoor showroom to view hardscape products. There is no question that Watkins has grown to accommodate the large commercial contractor as well as the home owner with a small repair project. Watkins employs 50 people and has a fleet of over 30 trucks to deliver the job on time. Over the years, Watkins has built a reputation for innovation, outstanding service and quality products. Architecturally Speaking: October Topic: NOT ALL CONCRETE IS THE SAME - Low Embodied Carbon Dry-Cast Concrete Masonry Description/Uses/Benefits: Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) are made with dry-cast concrete (zero-slump) which use less water and cement than poured-in-place concrete (typically referred to as wet-cast concrete). The unique structure of dry-cast concrete enables increased rates of carbon dioxide sequestration (aka carbon uptake, carbonation, limestone mineralization), and at a much faster rate when compared with wet-cast concrete. In addition to CMU assemblies using less cement and sequestering more carbon dioxide, they also use less volume of concrete due to their cores or voids. We can capture all 3 of these factors which drastically lower embodied carbon by looking at embodied carbon cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) studies. In recent industry research incorporating CMU specific sequestration testing, several wall assemblies were compared including a CMU cavity wall with architectural CMU veneer, insulated concrete forms (ICF) with clay brick veneer, tilt-up with thin brick veneer, wood frame with metal panel, and steel frame with metal panel. A1-A3 (cradle to gate) was considered, which is generally where concrete structures are the most embodied carbon intensive. Durability, resilience and low maintenance in the use phase of the building (which is where concrete shines) was not part of the study. Drumroll please… At the gate, CMU structures are closer in embodied carbon to the framed assemblies than they are to the other concrete assemblies! 2 years into the use phase, the concrete block cavity wall has similar embodied carbon compared to the framed assemblies. 20 years into the use phase, it is projected that the concrete block cavity wall will have lower embodied carbon when compared to the framed assemblies. And that’s the Beauty of Block.
