🐟 #Norway's 2024 #sealice impact assessment raises concerns, finding impact on wild #fish is "higher than desirable". 🔬 The evaluation, a critical step in determining future policies for #aquaculture growth and #sustainability under Norway's #trafficlight system, is undertaken by an expert group and encompasses 13 production areas along the entire Norwegian coastline. 💬 "With the warm summer this year, we were prepared that the lice impact would be higher in Northern Norway than in previous years. Icelandic land-based #aquaculture company First Water has secured €80 million in financing from Landsbankinn and Arion banki. 💰👏 🐟 #FirstWater is developing a state-of-the-art land-based #salmonfarming operation at #Laxabraut in #Þorlákshöfn, #Iceland, aiming to produce 50,000 tons of #salmon annually by 2029. 💬 “Financing a project of this magnitude is a challenging process and we are therefore pleased with the participation of Icelandic banks in the project. 🇨🇦🐟☑️ #Canada will introduce electronic logbooks in some #fisheries from January 2025. 💡 The new system, set to be introduced in the Gulf and #Quebec regions on January 1, 2025, and later in the Maritimes and #Newfoundland and #Labrador regions in the spring, will mean a shift from traditional paper-based logbooks. 📌 According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada, the adoption of #ELOGs is expected to improve the speed and accuracy of #data collection from #fishermen. 🐟 Sea lice are attracted by chemical signals from #salmon, study finds. 💡 New research has provided insights into why #salmon are particularly susceptible to #sealice infestations. 🔬 The study, conducted as part of the international #CrispResist project led by Nofima, identified #chemical compounds released by Atlantic salmon that attract sea lice, as well as potential deterrent substances. Specifically, a type of #semiochemical called kairomones appears to guide free-swimming larval lice, or copepodites, to salmon. 📌 The findings highlight differences between #Atlantic salmon and certain #Pacific salmon species, which are more resistant to sea lice and can eliminate them during early parasitic stages. ✨ Read more details here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dEXp6q6W

🐟 Bue Salmon has been granted a licence to produce 50,000 tons of #salmon at its planned land-based facility in Lutelandet, #Vestland County, #Norway. 💬 “This is a significant day for us at Bue. We are grateful for the constructive dialogue we have had with authorities, partners, and relevant experts during the application process,” said Knut Eikeland, CEO of #BueSalmon. 💬 “50,000 tons is a very large volume. However, the most important thing for us is to scale up safely while ensuring that neither space nor licensing becomes a limitation. We have already started a pilot project in Bulandet producing around 1,000 tons annually. It has been operational for nearly three years with great results.
