There is no equitable economic recovery without shared ownership of our economy and its businesses.

About us

The Democracy at Work Institute expands the promise of cooperative business ownership to reach those communities most directly affected by social and economic inequality. It ensures that further growth in the worker cooperative movement is both rooted in worker cooperatives themselves and reaches out to new communities of worker-owners.

  • Today, people across the globe are coming together to support the causes they care about. Imagine an economy where more people are not just employees, but co-owners. Where workers have the power to make decisions about their workplace and share in the profits. This is the economy we’re building, and today we’re asking you to be a part of it. Your support will give workers the opportunity to own their future and create businesses that uplift entire communities. Donate today and help us bring more worker cooperatives to life! https://lnkd.in/ehDrrUCC

  • This is our take on how we measure impact ❤️🔥 The second most common form of employee ownership in the United States is the worker cooperative where workers participate in both the financial success and governance of the firms. Today there are over 750 worker cooperatives in the United States, which is triple the amount that existed in 2012. How do we know these numbers? Unlike the number of ESOPs which can be tracked using publicly available data generated by the government, there is no public entity that tracks worker cooperatives. Instead, it has been nonprofit groups that have filled in this gap in knowledge. On this episode of Owners at Work, Michael Palmieri speaks with our Metric and Impact Analyst, Olga Prushinskaya, and our Data Arquictect, Jamie Pockrandt, about our State of the Sector report and what it found regarding worker cooperatives as well as other projects we have been working on which aim to better understand the impact that employee ownership is having on workers, companies, and communities. • "This is the most fun training I have ever attended, and I look forward to the next one”, says Karen Karendi, Cooperative Officer from Nyeri County. 61 pre-cooperative members and cooperative officers attended DAWI’s first Worker Cooperative Business Incubator in Kenya, in collaboration with the Cooperative University of Kenya, Global Communities’ CLEAR+ program, and the Nyeri County Government. The five-day training focused on the basic skills of worker cooperative governance, management, business, and gender equity. The pre-cooperatives attended included veterinary services, health professionals, construction members, cleaning and moving services, artists cooperatives, tourism, and mountain climbing. We're very excited to keep this work going as this was only the first of several planned worker cooperative business incubators in the interest of scaling worker cooperatives throughout Kenya. #DAWI #Internationalism #WorkerCooperatives #WorkerCo-ops

  • Congratulations to all the NETI fellows!

The Northeast Transition Initiative (NETI) Fellowship, a 9-month program that brought together business experts from across the region to expand their knowledge about exit planning and employee ownership, came to a close this month and we are celebrating our graduates by highlighting their plans to strengthen their local business communities. We asked each of our graduating fellows — who come from diverse backgrounds including lenders, small business development centers, economic development groups, and incubators — the same five questions to understand the unique needs of their communities and the learnings they plan to bring back and implement. Read what they had to say: https://lnkd.in/ga7NpNQg Congratulations to our fellows and we can't wait to see the impact you all have across the northeast! CDI is a proud partner of #NETI, a partnership of organizations whose mission is to expand the knowledge, resources and tools needed to support exit planning for business owners and transitions to employee ownership.
