It is my privilege to join the 16th Deloitte Private Art & Finance Conference and share some of my perspectives I have gathered during UNESCO Culture2030 Indicator Training as well our in depth investigation during INSPIRE TR project with the audience. I often wonder: our children's play spaces are full of creativity, yet as we grow up, why do our spaces seem to lose that spark? Why do we start to question – almost unnecessarily – the value of arts, culture and creativity? The idea that "arts, culture, and creativity are investible" is a belief I’ve long held. This was reinforced at the recent Arts and Finance Conference and Roundtable organised by Deloitte, PULSO and their partners. As an impact evaluator working deeply in arts and culture, I felt invigorated early this week, surrounded by so many inspiring minds. Here are a few moments that stood out: 💡 Caroline Norbury, OBE's thought-provoking opening speech on "creativity banks", envisioning a future where creativity leads and investment follows. Choosing not to invest in the creative economy isn't just leaving money on the table – it’s stifling innovation crucial for our rapidly evolving world. 🖌️ Adama Sanneh’s poetic insight: now is the age of creativity. Creativity transforms information into knowledge, echoing Alvin Toffler’s prediction from 50+ years ago: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” 🗣️ Rainer Kern's notes on language – highlighting creativity is the ability to deal with uncertainty, and a foundation for a democratic society. 💸 Fran Sanderson’s inspiring examples of how investment can empower arts, culture, and creativity. Check out 50+ case studies on Figurative’s website showcasing this in action: https://lnkd.in/d2qnwnsA 🎉 Laura Callanan’s pioneering experience launching Upstart Co-Lab, the first U.S. impact investment fund for the creative economy, one that disrupts traditional funding to support BIPOC and women entrepreneurs and generate economic outcomes for low-income communities. 🎨 Wakiuru Njuguna’s invitation to rethink arts financing through over 10 years of experience of HEVA Fund, a leader in arts-based blended finance in Africa. By engaging artists and creative economy practitioners, they create different financial products tailored to support enterprises like fashion, film, and events. 🖼️ To bridge findings across stakeholders, the sector should adopt shared standards while also embracing qualitative and creative methods for storytelling.
