Last weekend, Team WECU braved the rain and the cold to help plant trees for the Whatcom Million Trees Project. Volunteers dug holes, planted trees, spread mulch, and set up cages to protect the delicate trees planted on the land of the Whatcom Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which works to rehabilitate wildlife for release. The goal is to turn the 12-acre former hayfield back into a forest. The Whatcom Million Trees Project's mission is to promote healthy biodiversity in Whatcom County through planting trees, protecting the larger trees we already have, and bringing people together for positive change and action for the forest.

Last week, we welcomed local homeschool students for a behind-the-scenes tour of WECU's Lynden Branch! Through interactive activities, they learned about credit unions, the importance of financial literacy, and how a credit union functions as a community-focused financial institute. If you're interested in bringing a group of students for a branch tour, please reach out to impact@wecu.com.

This holiday season, shopping local isn’t just a choice—it’s an investment in our community. As WECU’s VP of Business Banking Kent Bouma explains, spending locally ensures more dollars stay in our neighborhoods, fostering jobs, community connection, and economic growth. At WECU, we’re proud to support the small businesses that make our communities unique. Join us in making a big impact this Small Business Saturday and beyond.

This weekend, Team WECU had an amazing time volunteering at the Tri-Parish Food Bank. Together, we helped provide meals to over 750 local families in need through their drive-thru food distribution program. A huge thank you to the food bank staff and volunteers who make this all possible! The Tri-Parish Food Bank is a cooperative effort of St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Conner, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Each week many volunteers ensure that nutritious food is available to anyone who needs it. Additional partners are Skagit Community Action Agency, Northwest Harvest, and Food Lifeline.

WECU is pleased to announce that our Education First Grant Program, initially providing $125,000 over two years to support educational initiatives in Whatcom and Skagit counties, has received an additional boost through a partnership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines). Through the FHLB Des Moines Member Impact Fund, this contribution has more than doubled to $312,500, amplifying the support for local organizations dedicated to educational and community development. The four 2024 grant recipients – Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY), Skagit Preschool and Resource Center, Economic Development Alliance of Skagit County – Startup School, and WHATCOM LITERACY COUNCIL – will now have increased resources to drive their missions forward.

We're excited to highlight one of our members, Nick, a US Navy veteran who recently received a Veterans Administration (VA) loan through WECU. "As veterans, we’ve been through things and still experience the lasting effects, like getting overwhelmed easily, so working with WECU—a place that is local and provides personal service—is a blessing. I knew Nate Walley and WECU would always be there to help, whether by phone or in person," Nick said. VA home loans are a new financing option available through WECU to our members. They are available to veterans, service members, and eligible surviving spouses. We're honored to support veterans with VA loans that meet their unique needs.
