Reminiscing about my development trip to Berlin at the beginning of 2024. I have been lucky enough to be a recipient of Arts Council England funding as part of their DYCP programme, and one of my main aims of the project was international travel to forge new connections and shadow some fellow mastering engineers. Berlin was an obvious choice as it is such a culturally and musically rich city. As an electronic music lover I had been before and loved it, so was confident it would be a great choice for a development trip. Shadowing is definitely my preferred way of learning as it is hands on and I can see (and hear) people's technique and workflow, and then have a go at implementing it myself. I was lucky enough to shadow Kevin Tuffy at Manmade Mastering KG, Enyang Ha at Funkhaus Berlin and Rashad Becker at clunk. Everyone was so open and welcoming, and offered different perspectives which I found super interesting. As if this wasn't enough, I also got to check out the HEDD | Heinz Electrodynamic Designs factory and see the BTS of their speaker and headphone creation, and Brewery Studios and briefly sit in on a jazz session being recorded to tape. What an amazing week that I will never forget! Some picture highlights below.
