Today, Crete, Nebraska joined the growing movement of places in the U.S. formally recognized as #CertifiedWelcoming. This means that Crete is a city where leaders and community members are working to ensure that all people — regardless of background or where they’re from — belong. Detroit’s rich history in Black liberation and immigrant inclusion has shaped the city we know today. #BlackHistoryMonth African Americans — along with European and Arab immigrants — arrived in the city in search of freedom and economic opportunity. Detroit was Michigan’s first #CertifiedWelcoming community, a testament to its commitment to support residents who have been in Detroit for generations and newly arrived neighbors.
