Habits drive 40% to 90% of daily decisions, but many fail to solve problems effectively. Replacing unhelpful habits with more constructive ones can lead to meaningful transformation. In December’s Holistic Webinar, “Hack Your Habits,” Habit Change Coach, Kara Sammet, PhD, discussed the importance of habit loops and starting small to sustain positive changes. Understanding these loops (recurring cycles that drive behavior) helps identify how and why certain tendencies become automatic. Three components needed to modify or develop new patterns include: 𝗖𝘂𝗲: Trigger that initiates a habit (e.g., time, location, emotional state) ↪️ Ask yourself, “Is this a thought, emotion, or sensation?” 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲: Behavior or action in response to the cue (e.g., drinking coffee when tired) ↪️ Describe what you want to change 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: Reinforcement that keeps the habit in place (e.g., energy spike from caffeine) ↪️ Ask yourself, “What do I gain?” Consider which part of the loop you want to rewire to evolve your habits.
