  • Thank you, City of St. Louis! BB153 passed out of the HUDZ committee with $34 Million going to early childhood education. Next, it will go to a full vote at the Board of Aldermen meeting on February 7. “WEPOWER and its partners are grateful the City is making early childhood a top priority and hopeful the Board of Aldermen will pass Board Bill 153 as-is on February 7. Data shows that increasing access and affordability of quality early childhood education for more families can create a transformational return on investment that addresses many of the challenges St. Louis faces, including public safety and economic development. Our TOP PRIORITY is to see BB153 remain as-is with a deep commitment to the $34 million for early childhood and the $60 million for housing and neighborhoods.” - Charli Cooksey, CEO What’s next: 1) Contact your alderperson and tell them to VOTE YES on BB153 as is. 2) Join us January 31 at 10AM at the Board of Aldermen meeting to show support for BB153. • URGENT ACTION NEEDED: CALL YOUR ST. LOUIS CITY ALDERPERSONS! Ask your Alderperson to advance BB153 and prioritize early childhood education. Currently, there are 89,132 children ages 0-5 in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. However, childcare providers in the city and county only have the capacity to serve 47,219 children (52%). Further, only 5% of early childhood centers and homes in St. Louis are accredited. It’s imperative that $50 million of the Rams Settlement dollars go to long term solutions to this crucial issue affecting families all throughout the City of St. Louis. Anything less is unacceptable. Prioritize Our Babies now, BOA! Want to do more? DM us for information about how to join us for this Wednesday’s public hearing. bit.ly/40dSaXR

  • ANNOUNCEMENT: The James S. McDonnell Foundation (JSMF) has awarded WEPOWER and partners, including IFF, $637,000, to conduct necessary research, planning, training, and community development to improve the regional early childhood education (ECE) landscape and share best practices nationally. The ultimate aim of the project is to deliver sustainable, high-quality early childhood education with a seat for every child in the region who needs one, and to ensure that all St. Louisans have access to quality child care. Dr. Jason Q. Purnell, President of JSMF, explains the organization’s commitment to early childhood education is a key element of its investments in the region’s workforce: “JSMF understands that early childhood programming is critical for parents in today’s workforce and essential for the next generation to have the best chance at higher wages and long-term economic mobility.” He adds, “Our region needs both the capacity to serve every child who needs an early childhood education seat and an actionable plan to make sure every family has access to those seats.” Read the full press release here: bit.ly/423jYkb
