Dear #Africa, Flying Labs are your one stop shop for spatial intelligence on disaster risk management. I'm confident that we can mitigate disasters in our continent if we use #drone data appropriately which was reaffirmed at a recent DRM conference hosted by SA Flying Labs SAFL. We are ready to train you to collect and model aerial data because the cost benefit of drones is maximized within mitigation activities, which shows that for every dollar spent on preparedness, as much as five dollars in future losses is saved, and in some cases even higher. This week we've had the pleasure of co-organising and running the annual "Drones, AI and GIS in Disaster Risk Management" conference for Southern Africa, alongside our partners from SA Flying Labs SAFL, WeRobotics and Esri South Africa. Government entities, NGOs, United Nations agencies, the Southern African Development Community Secretariat and private sector actors came together to exchange and learn from one another on how best to leverage geospatial technologies for efficient and collaborative disaster risk management across the region. #Localization of disaster risk management and humanitarian action must happen within coherent national and regional frameworks. Integrated geospatial infrastructures will help us achieve this. Key take-aways are that technology is no longer the barrier. Political and executive-level buy-in, as well as clear regulatory frameworks around geospatial tech, are essential for us to move from project-based outputs to long-term, systemic impact in addressing the growing disaster risks so many of us face today. Thank you also to Wingtra, Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, Santam Insurance and Lenovo for co-sponsoring with us and making this happen! #gis Esri #humanitarian #disastermanagement #dronesforgood
