The WCBR Associate Holiday Party was festive and fa-la-la-la-fun! Many enjoyed a cake walk, holiday Jeopardy, the Saran Wrap ball game, and other giveaways. But most of all, associates enjoyed spending time together. Thank you to all who came and thank you to those who organized and volunteered! Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season.

WCBR's Team USA showed up today! Chair volleyball is a serious event here. You must stay in your chair -- or you receive a gluteal penalty! And no cheating in "candy pong"! Folks who participated in fitness activities over the last few weeks also received goody bags fit for an Olympian. Thanks to all who played!

Yesterday, 200+ people celebrated Juneteenth, A Service of Joy & Healing, at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge. Juneteenth is the celebration of the day that the last enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom nearly two years after it was issued. We were honored to welcome special guests Apostle Sarah Kelley, Pastor and Founder of Faith, Hope, and Love International Healing and Deliverance Center in Charlottesville; the Center’s Dance Ministry and Praise Team led by Faith Kelley; and the Reverend Dr. Vernita Baldwin, Lead Police Chaplain of the Hampton Virginia Police Division. The program also featured performances by WCBR residents and associates. All blessed us with encouragement and reminded us of the continued work necessary to make the world a kinder and more just place for all. Thank you, all, for coming. A total solar eclipse occurred today, Monday, April 8, 2024, and was visible across North America (we saw 87%). Scientists will have a unique opportunity to study the Sun, Earth, and their interactions. NASA is chasing the eclipse with their high-altitude research planes. Did you know the next solar eclipse is not scheduled to occur in the US until August 23, 2044? Our residents and associates were there to witness this event! 🌗

On March 9, 1892, amidst a climate of growing racism and violence, three successful businesswomen and co-owners of the People’s Grocery Store were shot in suburban Memphis, TN. Their deaths inspired two of their friends- Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell- to launch an international antilynching campaign, which led to the creation of the National Association of Colored Women, the first African American women’s civil rights organization. #womenshistorymonth

Did you know that the Moton School located in Prince Edward County in Virginia played a pivotal role in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education landmark decision by the Supreme Court which ruled that U.S. state laws establishing racial separation in public schools are unconstitutional? Our residents visited the Moton Museum yesterday to learn more about the tremendous courage and bravery demonstrated by everyday citizens to make extraordinary change in America.
