Once a thriving industrial hub, the area’s decline left behind underutilized spaces. Now, the Willimansett Brownfields Area-Wide Plan (AWP) is breathing new life into the community. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚? The plan’s foundation is built on community engagement and inclusion, with local residents and business owners—many from historically underrepresented groups—shaping the redevelopment vision. By connecting nearly 2,000 individuals through creative outreach methods, the project ensures the transformation reflects the voices and needs of the community. • In this fourth video of our series, we highlight the restoration of Building D1 at the original Arlington Gas Works historical site. All existing buildings on-site underwent complete restoration, preserving their historical character while updating functionality. Building D1 has been restored for storage use, maintaining its terracotta tile roof, which was carefully repaired and preserved, along with the addition of snow guards and replaced capstones. Weston & Sampson also completed new windows, masonry repairs, and interior restorations in other site buildings, ensuring their longevity. This project presented unique challenges, including working on a flooded, hazardous site with a brook running through the center. Despite these obstacles, Weston & Sampson delivered a successful project, blending historical preservation with modern design solutions. • We’re excited to share the third in a series of four videos highlighting the transformation of Arlington’s Department of Public Works (DPW) and Municipal Services Facility at 51 Grove Street. This time, Nathan Seifert, David Steeves, and Sydni Clark discuss the technical aspects of the new DPW facility. The DPW operations building is designed with clear span requirements, height considerations, and pre-engineered metal structures that best meet the unique needs of #DPW operations. Heavy steel frames, columns, and bracing are integrated into the design and must be coordinated with every element—from cranes to fluid hose reels, exhaust systems, and other critical mechanical components. Achieving this requires close collaboration between mechanical, electrical, structural, and architectural teams, as well as the contractor during construction. Our 3D modeling and BIM software play a vital role in ensuring seamless coordination. Through these tools, our design and construction teams identify and resolve conflicts early, verifying each detail with purchased equipment to ensure everything fits perfectly and meets the client’s needs. The thoughtful design of the DPW facility allows Arlington to have a well-coordinated, functional space that accommodates their operational needs, including the long spans necessary for vehicle storage and maintenance. Revit modeling helps ensure that all HVAC systems, equipment, and structural components come together harmoniously to support the DPW’s mission of maintaining the community's infrastructure effectively. Weston & Sampson is proud to partner with Arlington in revitalizing this historic site. Stay tuned for more as we continue showcasing the exciting work happening at 51 Grove Street!
