About us
In 1925, three young graduates of the Case Western Reserve School of Law formed a partnership in Cleveland which managed to survive the stock market crash of 1929, the Depression of the 1930s and the dearth of business during the war years. They built a healthy general practice and a fine reputation for litigation. They laid the foundation for the firm's growth. Today, Weston Hurd LLP has 70 lawyers with offices in Cleveland and Columbus. We represent corporate clients, business, nonprofit and governmental entities of all kinds, as well as schools and individuals. We have also represented many casualty companies in the defense of every conceivable tort case. Our work involves litigation as well as the general practice of law in all its variations. Business, employment, estate planning and administration, family law, health care, insurance, intellectual property, labor and employment, real estate, school law, and tax are among the areas in which our attorneys work.

Recent Ohio Supreme Court decisions, as well as other important insurance coverage cases decided in 2024 were discussed by John Farnan and Patrick Cannell during their presentation “Ohio Insurance Coverage Cases from the Courts of Appeal and the Ohio Supreme Court” at the Akron Bar Association's Advanced Issues in Insurance Law seminar on December 13.

On December 10, 2024, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that a number of insurance companies owed no duty to provide insurance coverage to Sherwin-Williams for money that a California court ordered Sherwin-Williams to pay into an abatement fund to mitigate the hazards of lead paint. The Ohio Supreme Court determined that the abatement fund is intended to prevent or eliminate future harms related to lead poisoning, rather than to compensate for past physical or bodily harms or injuries. This meant that the abatement fund payments were not “damages” covered by the insurance policies. The decision, published as Slip Opinion No. 2024-Ohio-5773, is pending formal revision and publication to the Ohio Official Reports. John Farnan and I will be addressing this recent Ohio Supreme Court decision, as well as other important insurance coverage cases decided this year throughout Ohio, during our presentation on “2024 Ohio Insurance Coverage Cases from the Courts of Appeal and the Ohio Supreme Court” at the Akron Bar Association's "Advanced Issues in Insurance Law (2024)" seminar this Friday, December 13, 2024. This seminar is available for in-person attendance and by Zoom, with registration.
