About us
Founded in 2004 by Kulapat Yantrasast, WHY is a multi-disciplinary design practice dedicated to creating connections between people, culture, and place. Our team is based in Los Angeles and New York City, and the practice is organized as five interdependent workshops: Buildings, Landscape, Museums, Objects, and Ideas. This unique cross-disciplinary structure enables us to work across multiple sectors and combine different forms of expertise, generating progressive solutions for projects ranging from museums to mixed-use developments, community arts centers to private residences. In recent years, WHY has gained a reputation as a thought-leader in the fields of cultural and civic architecture, winning global competitions including the Ross Pavilion and West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland, and taking on major cultural landmark projects such as the Tchaikovsky Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Perm, Russia.

Featuring The Judith Center founder and artist Kathryn Andrews, Michelle Woo, co-founder of the social justice organization For Freedoms, Leigh Arnold, curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center, and Jaye Buchbinder, Emeco Industries, the discussion centered around how bias in architecture impacts the experience of art. Thank you to everyone who joined the discussion and the dancing that followed!

WHY is thrilled to welcome you back for the fifth edition of Frieze LA; our WILDING X WHY team has been on site at the Santa Monica Airport this week preparing for today's grand opening. WHY X WILDING Director, Mark Thomann, says of this year’s design: “Amid the vibrant installations and pop-ups, WILDING X WHY imagines a welcoming sanctuary centered on food and culture, nature and community as a prelude to the Frieze LA experience.” We’re grateful to once again collaborate with Frieze and show you our take on how art and nature can intertwine seamlessly, allowing inspiration to flourish. See you this week at Frieze!
