NYC Bird Alliance’s efforts to reduce bird collisions with glass has been spotlighted in recent articles by The Guardian and New York Post. This fall, our volunteers are on track to log a record number of collisions. The good news is that there are proven fixes available to reduce the quarter million deaths from collisions that occur in NYC each year: retrofitting windows and turning off non-essential lights at night.  NYC Bird Alliance has had tremendous success with window retrofit projects, reducing collisions by up to 90% in buildings. New D.C. Bird-Friendly Law Alert! As of October 1st, 2024, Washington D.C.'s Migratory Local Wildlife Protection Act (D.C. Law 24-337) enforces strict bird-friendly design standards for all new and renovated buildings. These changes are set to dramatically reduce bird collisions and protect migratory species. What you should know: ➡️ Bird-friendly glass threat factor: All glass must have a threat factor of 30 or less, making it more visible to birds and minimizing collisions. ➡️ First 100 feet of buildings: These glass requirements apply to the first 100 feet of building height, where birds are most at risk of striking reflective surfaces. You’ve chosen to make your glass Feather Friendly for birds -- great choice! But if you’re not sure what colour markers to use, we’ve got you covered. One essential factor for any bird-friendly glass solution is visibility under different lighting conditions. In other words, the markers you apply need enough contrast to signal to birds that there’s a barrier ahead. Here’s a simple guide: For reflective glass (usually darker), we recommend white markers to stand out against the background. For clear or fly-through glass, black markers work best to provide the contrast birds need to perceive the glass. For instance, a green marker might blend in on a window that reflects surrounding trees, while the right colour makes all the difference, helping birds avoid collisions. Choosing the right solution and the right colour could save a bird’s life – so if you’re still deciding, reach out!
