This is Jraghatspanyan 2022 Tigrani Special Selection from Armavir, Armenia. This is the first 100% Tigrani we have received into our ever growing Armenian wine portfolio, the largest in the U.S., if you don't mind me saying, and it is different. It is unique. It's got weight. It drinks like Syrah. And it is delicious!!! If you like Syrah or more specifically Cote Rotie, this is your wine from Armenian. We just got this wine in and I couldn't wait to try it. I have to hand it to @artemjraghatspanyan for making a very good and a very unique wine. I will enjoy drinking this wine and sharing it with my friends. Genatz!!! Armenian Wines: A Heritage Rooted in the Heights of History Armenian wines are a testament to the country’s deep-rooted winemaking heritage, combining ancient practices with exceptional natural conditions to produce unique, world-class wines. Nestled in the South Caucasus, Armenia boasts a winemaking tradition that stretches back at least 6,200 years, as evidenced by the discovery of the world’s oldest known winery in the Areni-1 cave. This ancient legacy is preserved through continuous cultivation of indigenous grape varietals, some of which have remained unchanged for over six millennia. One of the defining features of Armenian vineyards is their extraordinary altitude. Many vineyards are planted at elevations as high as 5,800 feet above sea level, making them some of the highest in the world. This high-altitude terroir creates cooler temperatures and greater diurnal shifts, which enhance the balance and complexity of the wines. Another crucial factor contributing to the distinctiveness of Armenian wines is the country’s volcanic soil. Rich in minerals, this soil imparts a characteristic minerality to the grapes, producing wines with vibrant acidity and bold flavor profiles. Armenia is also uniquely free from phylloxera, the destructive vine pest that devastated European vineyards in the 19th century. This rare advantage means Armenian vines often grow on their original rootstocks, preserving the authenticity and purity of their indigenous grape varieties, such as Areni Noir and Voskehat. With a winemaking history spanning millennia, Armenia is a land where tradition meets innovation. Its wines, shaped by high altitudes, volcanic soils, and an enduring commitment to its native grape varietals, continue to captivate wine lovers worldwide. This ancient winemaking nation is not just a relic of history but a thriving, dynamic force in the global wine scene.
