Bangladesh ranks among the top countries in the world with the highest rates of child marriage, where around 51% of young women in Bangladesh are married before they turn 18 years old. However, studies show that child marriage rates see significant decline after at least ten years of schooling, which is where USAID’s Esho Shikhi Activity in Bangladesh plays a role. Boalidaha government primary school in Sadullahpur, Gaibandha district is one of 10,000 schools engaged in USAID’s Esho Shikhi Activity interventions, including trainings for Head Teachers on creative ways to engage parents and the community to ensure girls’ access to education. To address the instances of student dropout before Grade 5 due to child marriage, Head Teacher Md. Robiul Islam Sarker wanted to raise awareness amongst parents, local education officials, and community leaders, by staging a drama on child marriage at Boalidaha school. In the drama, students highlighted the negative effects of child marriage, such as the physical and mental violence children might face by marrying early. Md. Robiul remarked, “In mothers’ gathering, I also shared messages on child marriage in the past. Esho Shikhi’s training that I received in March 2024 inspired me highly to deliver the messages through drama. It was an eye-opening experience for many parents, as students of the school, their own children, presented the probable consequences of early marriage, it helped them to internalize the demerits better.’’ Now in its fourth year of implementation, Esho Shikhi has trained almost 8,300 Head Teachers on the importance of engaging the whole community in safeguarding girls against the threats of early age marriage by supporting them in completing their education. #16daysofactivism #EshoShikhi #Endchildmarriage

In Odumasi, Ghana, local leaders, law enforcement, and community members came together as part of the commemoration of the 2024 World Day Against Child Labor to raise awareness about issues related to child protection and gender-based violence. Together, we are breaking the silence and challenging harmful practices that affect our families. The MATE MASIE project, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, helped victims and their families access legal support through the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service. Let’s empower each other to speak out and act! #16DaysOfActivism #MATEMASIE #EndGBV #CocoaCommunity #TogetherAgainstViolence

Winrock’s B-PEMS AugroJatra Climate Change Project, supported by the U.S. Department of State, is showing its solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Campaign 2024, initiated by UN Women. The theme of this year’s campaign, “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls,” resonates deeply with Winrock International’s mission. The project’s community mobilizers, known as ‘Augropothik’—a team of climate activists and survivors of trafficking and exploitation—learned about the campaign for the first time through Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) training organized by B-PEMS. In solidarity with the campaign, the Augropothik team created placards featuring #16days and #noexcuse and participated in group photo sessions, showcasing their commitment to the campaign’s theme. Throughout the activities, the Augropothiks expressed their passion for empowering their communities by raising awareness against GBV and promoting a culture of respect and equality. The initiative took place across the northern, south-central, and central regions of Bangladesh, with participants from eight districts actively engaging in the campaign. B-PEMS believes that, together, we can create a world free from gender-based violence. #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV #EndGenderBasedViolence #HumanRights

It was nice to connect with colleagues old and new at COP29 Azerbaijan. We used COP29 as an opportunity to play and test a prototype of a new Winrock ECO Game. This game is designed for players to improve decision making around carbon credits for Jurisdictional REDD+ programs and can help countries and communities maximize the benefits of Jurisdictional REDD+ programs by playing through various scenarios. Winrock has a suite of ECO Games that helps players understand how decisions impact various environmental and financial outcomes. They have the potential to drastically improve communities ecological and financial sustainability. https://lnkd.in/gn7_Tum9 Thanks to my colleagues Julie Nash Ph.D. and Pedro Ribeiro Piffer for organizing the session at COP, and Cody Kiefer who led the effort to develop this new game.
