Empowering Women’s Healthcare with AYUSH Practitioners The gap in access to quality healthcare services, especially in rural areas, continues to be a hurdle in India’s path to achieving universal health coverage by 2030. A recent article published on ET Government by Adv. Narendra Ahooja Vivek, Ex State Drugs Controller FDA, Haryana, spotlights how India’s 5.65 lakh AYUSH doctors can bridge this gap by harnessing their knowledge of Indian medicine and trusted position in communities. Specifically, the integration of AYUSH practitioners into women’s healthcare services holds great promise. Here’s how they can help: 🩺Act as first points of contact for reproductive health concerns 🩺Stock and prescribe contraceptives 🩺Enhance access to family planning options. This collaboration between traditional and modern medicine holds the power to transform women’s health outcomes across India! ✨ Learn more about how AYUSH can shape a healthier future here: https://lnkd.in/ge_TDJpH #AYUSH #WomensHealth #HealthcareForAll #HealthInnovation

About us
In 2023, @USAID’s @Frontier Health Markets (FHM) Engage partnered with @Samhita-CGF to create WOHLA in India. WOHLA is designed to serve as a health marketplace catalyst and to mobilize resources for improved access to women’s healthcare services and products (including family planning), livelihood opportunities, and economic empowerment for young girls and women. SamhitaCGF will leverage its experience in developing alliances – such as REVIVE, the India Protectors Fund, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, and the Corporate WASH platform – and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to engage foundations, other CSR funders, and implementation partners to support market development approaches that address the ‘will-skill gap’ among family planning value chain stakeholders.

Jodi B. Herman and Molly Barlow from the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Komal Khanna, Shikha Bansal, and the USAID team, visited the USAID/FHM Engage program site in Delhi. They met Sarita Singhania, a Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE) managing the CSC Academy in Palam. Sarita has engaged over 700 participants in the past three months, guiding them through training that enhances awareness of contraceptive options and fosters interest in digital and financial literacy. Participants shared inspiring stories of transformation, noting how spacing methods positively impacted their health and quality of life. The team also visited a local pharmacy where a pharmacist demonstrated access to the Nivi chatbot via a QR code. He shared a success story of a customer who used the chatbot to learn about new-generation oral contraceptive pills, ultimately leading to a consultation with her healthcare provider and a prescription, showcasing effective digital health integration. Last Thursday marked a rather eventful day at the U.S. Consulate General Mumbai. We hosted a multi-stakeholder event that had leaders across the WOHLA Alliance, NGOs, and CSR heads of the country on account of World Contraception Day. It was indeed a wonderful day discussing the importance of WOHLA as an intervention and alliance, and why it is the need of the hour with the starting point being as simple but nuanced as understanding what women want and need. The first session itself was highly engaging where leaders from the Economic Affairs of the Mumbai Consulate & the Alliance made some compelling statements with respect to the need of the hour of the Alliance, key statistics, and different roles and responsibilities. Swipe along to see what each of them had to say about synergizing health and livelihood to empower a million young women. We, along with the teams from USAID, Frontier Health Markets (FHM) Engage, and Samhita extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the event, "Synergizing Health and Livelihood: Empowering a Million Young Women." It was an incredible day of insights, conversations, and collaboration around the WOHLA Alliance and its role in empowering women. Some key takeaways: - The reality today: Early marriages, low contraceptive use, and high dropout rates due to childbirth hinder women's progress. WOHLA focuses on maternal and child health to reduce mortality and help women balance life and childcare. - USAID’s involvement: USAID got involved in WOHLA to focus on maternal and child health, particularly in preventing maternal and newborn mortality. We wanted to leverage technology and capital partnerships to demonstrate and scale the model. - FHM Engage’s focus: How can we bring people together for WOHLA? This can be achieved by increasing the uptake of WOHLA, securing more resources, fostering innovations around the model, providing leadership, and amplifying advocacy efforts. - Samhita-CGF’s role: As the alliance co-founding & knowledge partner, we integrate healthcare, especially sexual and reproductive health (SRH), with entrepreneurship and financial empowerment, helping scale healthcare organizations and increasing women's participation in the healthcare workforce. - CSC’s impact: CSC’s 250K Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), 25% of whom are women, are key to implementing WOHLA at the grassroots level. - NGO’s everlasting collaboration: We discussed an NGO partner’s role and how Tisser focuses on ‘Women’ and ‘Waste’ by integrating handicraft skills into interventions such as access to credit, skilling, healthcare, and livelihood transformation. - Innovative partners: FOGSI and IPA are committed to providing affordable contraceptives and access to healthcare through their vast networks, while DXC, IndusInd Bank, and other partners focus on empowering women through healthcare, skilling, and credit access. We are excited about the potential to work together and drive change through WOHLA. Stay tuned for future collaboration opportunities as we aim to empower 1 million women by 2026!
