  • 🌟 Did you know that a single event can drastically reduce plastic pollution? 🌟 On December 26, 2023, Women Against Plastic Nigeria made a significant impact at ChocParty 2023, hosted by The Chocboy Chocolatey Brand at Agodi Gardens. ⭐️With over 14,000 attendees, our campaign effectively raised awareness about plastic waste and its environmental impact. This event was a key part of our broader project aimed at tackling plastic pollution through education, community action, and promoting sustainable living. By strategically placing banners, coordinating waste collection efforts, and engaging with the community, we successfully collected over 195 kg of plastic waste. 🎯This effort supports several Sustainable Development Goals, including clean water and sanitation, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. Led by Ibukunoluwa AJAYI, our dedicated team worked tirelessly to ensure the event's success. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners for their invaluable support. The positive effects of this event are evident, and we look forward to more initiatives like this. • Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing Nigeria today. According to a recent report, Nigeria ranks ninth globally among countries with the highest contributions to plastic pollution, generating about 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. Unfortunately, over 88% of this waste is not recycled, but ends up in landfills, drains, rivers, lagoons, and the ocean. This poses serious threats to the health and well-being of humans, wildlife, and ecosystems. Some of the impacts of plastic pollution in Nigeria include: 💀 Clogging of drainage systems, leading to flooding, erosion, and waterborne diseases 💀 Ingestion of plastic by aquatic animals, causing intestinal damage, reduced growth, and mortality 💀 Transfer of harmful chemicals and pathogens from plastic to water, soil, and food 💀 Loss of aesthetic value and tourism potential of natural and cultural sites 💀 Increased greenhouse gas emissions from the production, disposal, and degradation of plastic To address this problem, Nigeria needs to take urgent and coordinated actions at various levels. Possible solutions include ✅ Enacting and enforcing laws and regulations to ban or reduce the production, importation, distribution, and use of single-use plastics ✅ Promoting the adoption of alternative materials, such as biodegradable or reusable bags, bottles, and containers
