16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - Day 5 Prisons are designed with men in mind, leaving incarcerated women to face systems that ignore their complex physical, mental, and emotional health needs. These environments magnify harm, fostering high rates of self-harm and chronic health issues. Built on control and punishment, prisons further entrench inequality and trauma for women. #EndVAW #16Days2024

We'll be at the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) Form next week! Let us know if you'd like to meet up or find us at the A1 booth with the International Network of Formerly Incarcerated Women. We're excited to join events highlighting how the war on drugs is a feminist issue and will have a special podcast episode from the Forum - highlighting why prisons are a feminist issue and why we urgently need to decriminalise poverty! #AWID2024

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - Day 4 Legal systems often fail to recognise the full context of abuse—psychological, physical, and financial—that underpins many women’s actions. Even where women act in self-defence, their circumstances are often ignored, leading to criminalisation. This compounds the harm they face, further entrenching cycles of violence and systemic neglect. In 2025 we look forward to sharing some research we have been engaged in with Penal Reform International on some of the factors that lead to women’s incarceration. #EndDeathPenalty #WomenOnDeathRow #16Days2024

“This is happening because of gaps in a broken system which is unsafe and unsuitable for women. In many cases, we know that housing simply isn’t available for women when they are released.” We spoke to Vicky Spratt for The i paper this week: https://lnkd.in/e6-X-3jw #WomenInPrison #Housing

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - Day 2 Women sentenced to death often have histories of gender-based violence woven into their life stories and circumstances. This violence does not end upon sentencing—on death row, many women continue to endure abuse. Despite this, legal systems rarely consider the impact of trauma and abuse as mitigating factors. Women Beyond Walls stands with World Coalition Against the Death Penalty (WCADP) and its other members in efforts to expose and challenge these injustices. Over these 16 days we encourage you to look at and share some of the facts, case studies and insights from the WCADP. #EndDeathPenalty #WomenOnDeathRow #16Days2024

On this #WorldDayforPreventionofChildAbuse, we are shining a light on violence against children (#VAC) in detention – an overlooked group. We need coordinated, data-driven action to safeguard the rights of children in detention. 🌐 Read our latest blog that summarises findings of research on Violence Against Children in detention across the EU. Penned by child rights expert Silvia Randazzo. #DataMosaic 📑 Drawing on the expertise of researchers and justice professionals across EU member states, this study identifies both gaps and promising practices in #monitoring and #datacollection. From France’s national violence prevention plan to Finland’s multi-agency collaboration, these insights reflect the varied approaches needed to protect children from all forms of violence, especially those in most vulnerable situations. 🔴 𝘌𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮, 𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Dear friends of Women Beyond Walls, We wanted to let you know that we will no longer be active on the social media site X (formerly Twitter). After careful consideration, we feel that the platform no longer aligns with our values. The harmful content promoted on X, including far-right conspiracy theories and racist narratives, stands in stark contrast to our mission which centres around inclusivity, equality, and social justice. We believe our time and energy is far better spent building community and amplifying voices in other digital spaces. Our account on X will remain for now, but will no longer be posting or engaging on there in any other way. You can find us via our website, on LinkedIn, Instagram and can follow our news via our newsletter on Substack. Thank you.
