🧠 We’re hit with a ton of information each day, around 74 gigabytes! Yet, we only retain 10% of that information from reading, and 20% from listening. Climate Week is full of panel discussions, talks, networking events, and presentations all week long. From first hand experience, I can say going to multiple sessions a day for a full week at Climate Week can feel like a blur. Workshop, Inc. was tasked with designing an engaging workshop-style event to help the Apparel Impact Institute introduce sustainable finance solutions for decarbonization. We knew attendees would have already taken in a ton of information—and sustainable finance can quickly get complex—so we set out to design an event that would engage and energize the room. 🎯 The goal: We had two main goals for this event. We wanted to help participants better absorb and retain complex information. We also wanted to ignite meaningful conversation between suppliers, brands, banks, and philanthropies about the challenge of funding decarbonization. We know that visual learning and play—yes, play—help people understand and remember information. Research on how we learn backs this up. We retain up to 65% of visual information and learning through play can increase information retention by up to 20%. We decided to use “learning through play” as the framing for our event to boost engagement, memory, and creative problem-solving. 💡 🃏 👁️ 📌 The solution: We designed an interactive card game based on Aii’s "Brand Playbook for Financing Decarbonization," (link: https://lnkd.in/ektdzAHP ) which highlights 12 strategies to fund decarbonization in the apparel supply chain. Each table played the game, and took turns role-playing as a supplier, brand or bank. Each round of the game used prompts to create conversation, understanding, and empathy for each other. For a bit of fun, we introduced "Wild Cards” to mix things up and redirect conversation. 📈 The result: We weren’t entirely sure what to expect in the room, but the game was a fun, visual, and social experience that made complex financial topics more accessible and memorable. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and full of excitement. People loved how the game brought new energy to the conversation around decarbonization and brought these important strategies to life. People felt inspired to bring these financial strategies back to their organization. Workshop has been working with Aii to build engagement on sustainable finance over the last year+, and it’s so rewarding to see the impacts of this work at a time when this work feels more important than ever. Thank you to Apparel Impact Institute for giving us the latitude to be creative and to HSBC for hosting this Climate Week event. (Workshop designed the experience and game and we extended an existing visual system Aii already had.)

A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality. - Yoko Ono *** I went on a work trip to London last month, and last minute, I decided to take my 14-year old daughter with me. When work wrapped, we wandered Central London together without a timetable, following our curiosity into museums, hidden alleyways and compelling places. We made it to the Tate Modern, a first for both of us, and bought tickets to the current Yoko Ono exhibition called Music of the Mind. It was a moving experience that surprised us both, and I was struck by Yoko Ono’s vivid belief in the power of collective action. The exhibition was infused with invitations for us to participate and add to installations. It was a simple but powerful experience to co-create with each other (those in the room with us, those who were there before us, and those who would come after us). It reminded me of what's possible when we come together. We started at the Wishing Trees, with hundreds of wishes strung from branches, and pen-and-paper to add our own to the many notes of hope for peace, freedom and change (for the better). Then, we wandered through Yoko Ono’s instructions for art, which were originally hand written in Japanese and read like fantastical short poems. The instructions guide us to make our own art. Like this one: "PAINTING FOR THE WIND // Cut a hole in a bag filled with seeds of any kind and place the bag where there is wind." The instructions call to our creativity, remind us of our agency, and empower us to participate. We walked through a long hallway papered with thousands of notes to mothers, in dozens of languages. We read as many as we could, and we were invited to add our own. There was the sense of being part of a larger human story, with our fundamental commonalities on full display. To me, the most powerful experience was the "Add Colour" installation: a 40x40 room that we were invited to add to, as we considered quietly the plight of refugees, the human story of migration, the pursuit of freedom, the desire for belonging. The walls were layered with blue-ink sentiments and drawings as high as the tallest person. *** I walked away from this experience with Yoko Ono's work with the conviction that we are the arbiters and designers of our future. I am clearer than ever about the power of collective action in our current moment. I'm inspired to think bigger about how we convene, how we mobilize, how we organize, and how we come together to build new systems that are regenerative, equitable and connective. It’s ours to (co)create. Guiding questions for those of us in leadership and in service at this tenuous time for our world: How might we...invite people to reconnect with their agency? How might we...give people the experience of co-creation? How might we...channel our imagination into action? How might we...turn the dream into reality (together)?

*CONVENING FOR ACTIVATION* Last week, I had the privilege of facilitating a super-energized convening with our partners at Apparel Impact Institute. They wanted to bring together diverse collaborators for a shared, ambitious goal: to reduce 100 million tons of carbon in the apparel supply chain. Achieving this goal is only possible if we create breakthrough collaboration across the fashion value chain. I believe that collaboration is the only way forward on climate action. But I’m also not naive about collaboration. It’s hard work to get people working well together. But this is the work I've signed up for: when collaboration feels impossible, but it’s the only way forward. The Apparel Impact Institute team was committed to using their convening for activation. So, we invited a small group of problem-solvers to join us at The Rockefeller Foundation's new convening space in New York. After months of meticulous planning, our intentionality paid off. We created the conditions for activation, and it worked. Here's what we did (and what we learned). 1. Intentionality in Invitations We curated the list of participants. We invited 60 people with the right knowledge and a sense of urgency to take action. An important caveat here, when we make any convening “invite only,” we have to be intentional about including diverse perspectives. For this summit, we prioritized having the voice of suppliers in the room and perspective from supply chains in the Global South. 2. Clarity of Purpose From our earliest communications to a daily reminder when we were together in person, we articulated a clear purpose statement that we were convening for activation. We continuously reminded attendees that our shared goal was to activate and problem-solve. 3. Workshop-Focused Agenda We dedicated substantial time for attendees to co-work on strategic areas that needed collaboration. Breakout sessions were not time to pontificate -- they were workshops designed to advance outcomes. We used best practices for co-development, problem-solving and shared decision-making. 4. Commitment to Action On our last day together, the summit ended with commitments. We asked everyone in the room these two questions (1) What can you commit to advance our work together this year? (2) What is one action you will take next week? It was incredible to watch as we passed the mic around the room to share commitments. The energy in the room sparked. When we parted ways, there was a sense that we were just getting started. I’m still flying high from this experience last week, and I'm even more convinced about the power of convening for activation. It’s possible, and it's potent. Let’s do more of this. Climate action is fast becoming part of everyone’s job. To get this work truly activated and operationalized, we have to create high-functioning cross-functional teams. That’s no small feat, but it can be done. To us, there is nothing better than being part of an activated, clear-eyed and brave team that has momentum. When teams are in this mode, everything is possible! Which is exactly why we want teams like this working on climate action. Even in challenging organizations and seemingly insurmountable systems, we've been able to create set-apart space for teams to gain momentum. When building cross-functional collaborations, Workshop considers both the culture we need to create on the team and the structural design that keeps work moving. Both are fundamental: culture nurtures the team’s spirit and commitment, while structure provides the scaffolding for action. Let's start by talking about culture. 🪄 Creating a Micro-Culture 🪄 Even in an organization that can be stressful or limiting, we have the power to create micro-cultures on a team. There is so much power in a small, activated team of people who are committed to a purpose and committed to each other. When setting up cross-functional teams, we spend time upfront to establish intentions and agreements. We start every working session with connection time to build rapport and trust. ✨ Committing to Shared Purpose ✨ It’s so important to rally a cross-functional team around a shared purpose. This can be a potent way to elevate a team when they get bogged down. We like the formality of a “purpose statement.” Something clear, succinct and human (read: not a grand statement about objectives or outcomes). It should instead be focused on the people we’re trying to help. We like purpose statements that answer this question: Who are we helping, and how are we helping them? 🎉 Celebrating Collective Success 🎉 It’s important to understand what success looks like for every member of a cross-functional team. Likely, each team member will have different drivers, based on where they sit in the organization. When forming a new cross-functional team, we take time to co-define a picture of success. We ask them to imagine what success looks like and feels like. And along the way, we take time to celebrate our successes and wins, no matter how small. Seeing progress can keep a team going, even when the going gets tough. *** We believe in the power of teams to create change. What I know: Climate action is the challenge of our time. What I also know: It’s hard work. Some days, solving this feels impossible. (Speaking from experience.) What I still believe: Solving this is possible. The reason I believe this is possible, is because I believe in the power of us: you and me. We have the agency. We have the ingenuity. We have the tenacity. I believe in us. But we do need a better way of working together to tackle this. Our current ways of working don’t support the scale of collaboration and change that’s needed. So, let’s find another way. Here’s what I have to offer. I’ve dedicated my work, my team and my time to finding another way. Over the last year, Workshop has been designing and refining a model we call the 90-Day Climate Activation Sprint. We’ve been using versions of this model for years in our climate action work with corporate teams and NGOs. We started experimenting, because we realized we needed to design the right conditions for cross-disciplinary teams to advance this work in complex organizations. The takeaway is this: we can't wait for the right conditions, we have to create them. So, we did. Our model combines the best of agile methods, design thinking and facilitation practice (and a lot of hard-earned experience). It's an intentional sprint structure for cross-disciplinary teams to come together and make progress on climate commitments in 90 days (or less). Though it’s not just about the progress that can be achieved in 90 days. It’s also about the momentum that this sprint creates, the capability it builds on a team, the mindset of possibility and progress we all gain along the way. In this way, even one 90-day sprint can become the shot of momentum that we all need to keep going, keep solving, keep believing. So, that's what we're up to at Workshop right now. I'm pouring all my energy into climate activation, because it's the commitment I've made to this work, to you, and to us.
