Remote work stats for 2024 "How has remote work changed over the years?" "What does the future of remote work look like?" "Is remote work here to stay?" The short version is: Absolutely. The long version? 1. 57% of workers would change jobs if remote work was not offered. 2. 92% of employees work remotely at least one day a week. 3. AI is transforming remote work by automating routine tasks and boosting productivity. 4. 75% of remote workers report a better work-life balance. 5. IT is leading the way in remote work, driven by digital transformation. 6. Remote work is here to stay. 7. In Europe, remote work rose from 5% in 2019 to an estimated 25% in 2024, a 5x increase. 8. In the US, remote work accounted for 7% of paid workdays in 2019, compared to 25% in 2024, marking a 3.6x increase. These numbers show a clear trend. RTO mandates lead high performers and senior employees to leave. What’s worse, RTO mandates are seperating families of many junior employees who can not find other opportunities quickly. I visited a university in the mid west last week. One of the PhD students there became a mom two years ago. While I congratulated her, she told me that her husband was forced to go back to Amazon’s headquarters in Arlington VA due to its RTO mandate. She is on scholarship but can not afford raising the child without her husband’s income. So, her husband cannot risk losing his job. Their family with a young child is seperated and struggling. She told me that her husband’s team members donot go to the same office. Some go to the NYC office, and some go to another office in Herdon VA. So everyday, they have ZOOM calls in office to communicate with each other…. Even worse, many people are doing those calls at the same time. As a result, it gets very noisy and nobody can really focus on their jobs….. While Elon Musk is promoting 5 day RTO at the federal government with his son, RTO is separating many young families.

Many executives today are looking to get employees back into the office. Leaders should be careful though—doing so could result in mass departures from top performers. A new working paper by associate business professor Mark Ma and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh found that firms that implemented return-to-office mandates also lost a significant number of senior and skilled employees.
