The World Press Institute #2024fellowship has made the past nine weeks unforgettable. Over two months of intensive activities in the United States, immersing myself in the country’s vibrant #media, #political, #cultural and #socioeconomic landscape. From #Minnesota to #Iowa, #Washington D.C., #NewYork, #Florida, #Phoenix, #SanFrancisco and #Chicago. Over 120 meetings with media leaders, experts in #ArtificialIntelligence (#AI), #policy, #politics and #diplomats, discussing the future of #journalism and exploring collaborative #opportunities. From speaking in public forums to informal discussions with U.S citizens on the streets of #Manhattan, Union Square and the bustling city of Chicago. From interacting with high school #students to giving lectures on journalism in the university. Visiting the most crossed #border in the world (U.S/Mexico) where I spoke with people residing in those communities on politics of #immigration, media portrayal and how it affects their lives. Another visit to the longest #international border (U.S/Canada), speaking with #native tribes, learning about their rich #heritage and how they govern their territory. The thought provoking visit to SAN QUENTIN STATE PRISON, learning more about the #California model, interacting with the incarcerated on their transformative journey. Most of all: Witnessing #democracy in action, before, during and after the #Americapresidentialelection 2024, just to mention a few. This journey has broadened my perspective, ignited new ideas and forged lasting connections. #journalism #ArtificialIntelligence #media #wpifellowship2024 #USelection2024

So, what's it like participating in the 59th cohort of the World Press Institute Fellowship for 2024? Since the fellowship began more than six weeks ago, a few colleagues, friends, and loved ones have asked me this question. In short - it's been phenomenal! A whirlwind experience, allowing us to interact with political leaders, captains of industry, members of the judiciary, subject matter experts, and peers leading global media agencies. All of them have shared their perspectives on the role and responsibility of media and the press in enhancing access to knowledge and information and holding truth to power. Here is a very brief overview of our experience so far.

My Brookings Anti-Corruption, Democracy, and Security (ACDS) colleagues and I welcomed journalists from around the world to discuss pressing anti-corruption and democracy issues in the United States and globally. We discussed AI and democracy, the factors that enable corruption, and the critical role of beneficial ownership transparency in supporting investigative journalism.  ACDS recognizes the crucial role journalists and independent media play to preserve democracy in every country. Thank you to the World Press Institute and Zach Mullinax for joining us The Brookings Institution with Robin Lewis and Stephanie Siemek. - Multi-Award Winning Broadcaster of KayaBiz on Kaya959. - Financial Journalist. - Global Moderator. - WPI US 2024 Journalism Fellow at World Press Institute,

More than two weeks have passed since I arrived in the Twin Cities - Minneapolis & St. Paul, to participate in the World Press Institute Fellowship for 2024. The Fellowship is a fantastic opportunity for myself and nine other journalists from all over the world to immerse ourselves in the governance, politics, business, media, journalistic ethics and culture of the United States. This year is poignant as American citizens head to the polls in November to vote in a highly contested Presidential election. Since my arrival, we have had the opportunity to participate in various stakeholder engagements, site visits, lectures and tours that have offered great insight into the nuances of American politics, law, economics and everyday life - primarily in the Midwest. Over the next few weeks, I'll share some insight into my journey and a few highlights of my experience as we prepare to crisscross the country, visiting various cities and states to reflect on the diverse aspects that shape America's society. Below is my first blog post reflecting how politics and economics shape the everyday financial experience of American citizens. https://lnkd.in/d4WqehfM

  • The #WPIFellowship class of 2024 arrives tomorrow, which means we have one more fellow to meet! Last but not least is Kristina Zeleniuk of Ukraine 🇺🇦! 📍 Location: Kyiv ✍️ Selected bylines: tan.ua, where I’ve been working as a foreign policy journalist for five years now. And OFFREC, my own weekly podcast about international events and their impact on Ukraine. ✨ Hopes for the #WPIFellowship: I’ve never been to the U.S., despite the fact that as a journalist I constantly write about America. What is more important, my participation will be exactly during the election campaign. Therefore, I really hope to explore and get to know the U.S. better, find out how Americans support Ukraine, we’ll see who will win the elections and become the next American president, and also thank Americans for supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia for the third year in a row. 💓 Favorite assignment to date: Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 started, journalists not only in Ukraine felt that video and short reels were supplanting articles and print analytics. However, after February 24, 2022, and with the spread of instability around the world, more and more people started reading print media and analytical articles again. This is very gratifying. Especially since I like to write lengthy articles where I explain to people what is happening in the world and how it affects Ukraine. 🦸 Superpowers: I’m always on time, can quickly organize a group of people for some event and of course can cook something delicious from Ukrainian cuisine. 👂If you could have dinner with any journalist living or dead: Ukrainian journalist Georgiy Gongadze, he was killed in 2000 ✈️ Recent travel: For work, Taiwan in January 2024 🥔 Favorite food: Ukrainian Borscht 👟 Favorite way to relax: Sport and reading books 📚 Reading right now: Timothy Andrews Sayle Enduring Alliance: A History of NATO and the Postwar Global Order
