#COP29 was a mixed bag. Branded the “Finance COP,” it delivered some progress—like a $300 billion annual climate finance goal by 2035 and the long-awaited approval of Article 6 to regulate global carbon markets. But for many, especially in the Global South, these steps fell far short of what’s needed. Big questions also lingered about global climate leadership, while activists criticized the fossil fuel influence at the event. Still, subnational leaders showed what’s possible, with U.S. states and cities stepping up to drive progress. The key takeaway: we must be relentless. 🏭 Relentless in cutting emissions. 🔋 Relentless in transitioning to renewable energy. 🌱 Relentless in protecting communities and ecosystems. 📣 Relentless in ensuring equity and justice in all climate actions. Sharing my reflections on the busy fall sustainability season, from the biodiversity COP, climate COP and the upcoming negotiations for a global treaty to end plastic pollution, as well as the U.S. election -- and what it all means for the global momentum on climate and nature. To say it's been an eventful few weeks would be an understatement!
WWF is thrilled to announce the selection of climate activist Peter Pham as the recipient of the WWF-US Youth Conservation Leadership Award for 2024. Peter is a climate activist, environmental leader, policymaker, and public servant. He is a co-founder of Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action, a grassroots group dedicated to fighting climate change through local initiatives. He studied public health at the University of California, Berkeley, and currently works in clean tech. WWF’s prestigious Youth Conservation Leadership Award is given annually to a young conservation leader for outstanding contributions to the environmental field.
