"Well-designed and carefully implemented nature-based solutions can respond flexibly to economic shocks, by providing diverse employment opportunities across different skill levels and targeting underserved communities and disadvantaged groups," writes Alexandre Chausson, lead author and WWF Nature-based Solutions Specialist, in this newly published Oxford study. Using examples like the WWF South Africa supported Working for Water program, which has created over 20,000 jobs while clearing invasive species, this research points to NbS as essential tools for building resilient economies. While these solutions can bring economic and social benefits, the authors stress that fully realizing their impact requires thoughtful approaches that engage local communities and embrace long-term planning. The recent Dutch Fund for Climate and Development and AGRI3 Fund event at #COP16 brought together leaders to discuss mobilizing finance for critical challenges like water scarcity. Events like these highlight the growing momentum for nature-positive solutions. At Bankable Nature Solutions, we’re inspired by these discussions and are committed to scaling up financing for projects that build resilience and sustainability in food systems and beyond.

We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished at this year’s WWF Bankable Nature Solutions Investor Workshop, held on October 22, 2024. We were joined by 80 workshop participants representing over 45 organizations, including investors, companies, and development organizations, highlighting the growing interest in financing Bankable Nature Solutions. This year, we showcased five inspiring projects led by passionate leaders: Arko Chatterjee (NaturaYuva), Harry Malichi (Wuchi Wami Limited), Jonty Rawlins (The Tunza Fund), Robin Bartmann (Vlinder) and Wolf-Rüdiger Daetz (Talmond Foods). A big congratulations to Vlinder, which won the investor-voted award for best project of the year and will receive 5000 euros of Technical Assistance! We are also grateful to our discussion panel speakers: Fernando Russo from Meraki Impact and Avital van Meijeren Karp, Daniel McQuillan, David Donnelly, Rajan Kundra from WWF, for their valuable discussions on how to mobilize capital for regenerative agriculture and the strategic role of WWF in supporting the transition to sustainable food systems. As was noted during the discussion: “WWF’s role in impact investing is not just about convening capital, it’s about leveraging our global networks, technical expertise, and on-the-ground partnerships to build trust. Only by leveraging this, we can create the finances and projects needed to restore nature”. Thank you to all the participants, partners, and supporters who contributed to the success of this workshop. This set of 4 BNS case studies have been selected from over 80 publicly announced projects that have received grant and technical assistance support from BNS funds & facilities with the engagement of WWF since 2021. Dutch Fund for Climate and Development (DFCD), Landscape Resilience Fund (LRF) and MoMo4C (Mobilising More for Climate) have identified these projects as delivering promising work in Africa, Asia, and South America, in the sustainable agriculture and sustainable forest management sectors, with a particular focus on agroforestry.
