Pavlo Golub will present on the new features of pgwatch v3, and Belma Canik will discuss AI-powered text search with pgvector for PostgreSQL. Attendees can learn, network, and enjoy light refreshments. Check out the LinkedIn event for more details: https://lnkd.in/ecBgUdm3

The first event of 2025 will take place on Monday, February 24th, at 17:30 at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Karlin offices. Venue Sponsor: AWS We thank Ernst-Robert Weckerling for helping us secure a venue for our February meetup at AWS. We will have two speakers: Pavlo Golub and Belma Canik Pavlo Golub is a PostgreSQL contributor, GSoC Org Admin, and a Senior Developer and Expert at CYBERTEC PostgreSQL Services and Support. He's been working with PostgreSQL since 2002. He has an M.Ed. with an emphasis in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Central Ukrainian State Pedagogical University. He is the co-founder of PostgreSQL Ukraine. He develops and maintains the PostgresDAC and pgxmock libraries, as well as the pgwatch, pg_timetable, and vip_manager projects. Belma Canik is a Senior Database Specialist Technical Account Manager (STAM) at Amazon Web Services (AWS); she has over two decades of experience working with relational databases. She helps customers run optimized workloads on AWS and make the best out of their cloud journey, especially in Amazon RDS and Aurora Database Engines. Agenda 17:30 Doors open 18:00 - 18:15 Opening talk by Gülçin Yıldırım Jelínek 18:15 - 18:45 Getting Started with pgwatch v3: Features, Installation, and Use Cases by Pavlo Golub 18:45 - 19:15 Coffee break & Networking 19:15 - 19:45 Beyond Keywords: AI-powered Text Search with pgvector for PostgreSQL by Belma Canik 19:45 - 20:00 Closing 20:30 End of event Getting Started with pgwatch v3: Features, Installation, and Use Cases - Pavlo Golub In this talk, Pavlo Golub will introduce pgwatch, now in its third major version. He’ll begin with the basics, how to install and configure pgwatch v3 to monitor your PostgreSQL instances effectively. Then, he’ll walk you through its key features, demonstrating how it can help you track performance, detect bottlenecks, and optimize database operations. He’ll also compare pgwatch v3 with other monitoring solutions, highlighting its unique advantages and use cases. Pavlo looks forward to your questions and insights during the session. Whether you're new to PostgreSQL monitoring or already familiar with other tools, this talk will offer valuable takeaways and spark an engaging discussion. Beyond Keywords: AI-powered Text Search with pgvector for PostgreSQL The session discusses challenges with current search algorithms with vast and complex datasets. This talk delves into a revolutionary approach: semantic search with pgvector for PostgreSQL. pgvector makes use of vector embeddings, which capture the meaning behind words rather than their exact presence. This allows searches to comprehend the purpose of user queries, producing more relevant results. In the talk, we demystified complex pgvector search algorithms along with recent innovations. We presented a use case demo using Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL for product similarity search in an online retail store by going into the depth of pgvector search methods.

  • If you’ve ever wanted a more modern way to build extensions for PostgreSQL but found C too dated and Rust too intricate, pgzx might be the solution for you. In our latest Postgres Café episode, Tudor Golubenco discusses the Zig programming language and explores how pgzx further helps developers with built-in memory checks, a streamlined comptime feature, and a refreshingly direct way to call Postgres internals. Whether you’re migrating an existing codebase or building something entirely new, pgzx strikes a good balance of safety, performance, and flexibility. Watch now: https://lnkd.in/eJX46Q4D

  • We’ve just released pgroll v0.9, our open-source Postgres schema migration tool built around multi-version, lock-safe migrations. This update delivers one breaking change (renaming columns now uses a rename_column operation), and adds several improvements that make defining table-level constraints more straightforward. From primary keys to exclude constraints, you can now manage them all in a single create_table operation, which simplifies complex migrations and keeps your database tidy. On top of that, we’ve boosted CLI feedback so you can see real-time progress on those longer data backfills. If you’re juggling frequent schema changes and can’t afford downtime, pgroll might be exactly what you need. We’re excited to see how these new features improve your workflow. Head over to the blog for the details, and let us know what you think or how you’re using pgroll in your own projects! https://lnkd.in/eK5prY_i

The best part about #PostgreSQL is it's extensibility, in our opinion (although there is a lot to be celebrated about this incredibly robust #RDBMS!). As a result, we're avid fans of contributing to the upstream source code and supporting such endeavors. One of the #OpenSource projects we support is #CitusData - an extension from Microsoft that we find is a great solution for managing distributed PostgreSQL instances at scale. Check out the latest #PostgresCafe episode from Gülçin Yıldırım Jelínek (of Xata.io) & Sarah Conway (of Data Bene) where they meet with Stéphane Carton and discuss some of the advantages Citus Data brings to the table when looking to implement resilient, highly scalable architecture. https://lnkd.in/grpzKhV4 #devs #devcommunity #postgres #tech #techpodcast

When performing schema changes in PostgreSQL, lock contention can lead to significant downtime and performance issues. In Gülçin Yıldırım Jelínek's latest blog, she covers practical strategies for reducing locking impact in production systems. ✅ Use CONCURRENTLY commands like CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY and ALTER TABLE DETACH PARTITION CONCURRENTLY to avoid heavy locking, allowing other operations to proceed smoothly. ✅ Break down large DDL operations into smaller steps. For example, adding a NOT NULL column in stages and adding a nullable column with a DEFAULT first, then populating any NULL values and finally adding NOT NULL constraint. ✅ Stay up-to-date with the latest PostgreSQL versions. Newer releases include optimisations that reduce locking and make schema modifications faster and less disruptive. Check out the full blog to learn more about how you can improve PostgreSQL performance and ensure minimal downtime during schema changes. https://lnkd.in/e-Sn78wM

  • In Episode 3 of Postgres Café, Sarah Conway and Gülçin Yıldırım Jelínek chat with the creator of pgstream, an open-source change data capture (CDC) tool that addresses PostgreSQL’s biggest gaps. While native replication tools handle data changes, schema updates (DDL) often require manual fixes. pgstream solves this by replicating both schema and data changes. Learn how pgstream solves schema replication challenges, manages lag with Kafka integration, and powers modular workflows for tools like OpenSearch. Real-world use cases include Postgres-to-OpenSearch replication for search and S3 cleanup workflows. 👉 Watch the full episode: https://lnkd.in/eJ-vsaTU
