950 AI medical devices have FDA approval. 0 of them will work exactly the same way next year. Here's 3 changes the FDA is making with AI medtech: 1. Continuous Risk Monitoring → The FDA won't just check your device once. They'll want ongoing monitoring as your AI learns and evolves. → Your device that worked perfectly in testing? It could develop blind spots as it processes new data. 2. Transparency Requirements → It's not enough to say "our AI makes diagnoses." → You'll need to show exactly how confident your AI is (e.g., "95% confidence of infection risk") → Clear warnings about what populations your AI wasn't trained on (like adults vs. children) 3. Clinical Decision Support → AI is outperforming doctors in some diagnostic cases → Companies will now share responsibility for clinical decisions → The FDA wants guardrails around how AI guides medical choices The Bottom Line: The FDA is building new rules for AI medical devices. Medtech innovators, you need a plan for: - Post-market monitoring - Clear confidence metrics - Population-specific warnings - Ongoing risk assessment Don't wait for the regulations to catch up. Start building these considerations into your development process now. Things are moving at light speed.
