2024 saw another increase in the number of publications in the field of enhanced rock weathering (ERW)! The full list of publications can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dA6-s-PW 📈 While the number of published peer-reviewed articles has increased too, much of the increase is driven by non-peer reviewed publications such as pre-prints, blog posts, reports, etc. Personally, I feel conflicted about this. 🌍 We need to learn how to remove CO2 from the atmosphere as quickly as possible – given how long peer-review may take, openly sharing pre-prints and project updates at early stages can certainly help with this. They are also a great way to share early-stage research and get valuable feedback which will ultimately increase the quality of the final publication. ⚖️ However, I also worry that the line between what is peer-reviewed and what is not is becoming increasingly blurry, particularly if authors attribute DOIs to blog posts, reports, etc.. While many of the existing non-peer reviewed pieces are great, not all are of publication-quality. Although certainly not perfect, there is a reason we use the peer-review process: quality control. But these non-peer reviewed publications are increasingly being cited in peer-reviewed publications, eroding the quality of the fact-base ongoing studies are grounded in. 🤔 There is certainly lots to be said about the merit of pre-prints. But I think at a minimum, the fact that a publication is not peer-reviewed should be mentioned when it is cited in a peer-reviewed format. I would also prefer blog posts etc. did not generate a DOI, as this makes it very easy for people to misinterpret the status of a citation. What is your opinion on this? 📉 Also, the decrease in the number of "mine tailings & waste" and "reactor & industrial" publications is probably an artifact as I do not update those lists as thoroughly & primarily focus on ERW. For a similar reason, I have dropped the “coastal & ocean” category compared to the last version of this plot.
