About us

Yoga Alliance is the leading nonprofit association representing the yoga community worldwide. We do this through: • Celebrating and uplifting the many diverse yoga styles, traditions, and lineages; • Upholding the worldwide growth of yoga through education and community, including Digital Event programming; • Encouraging safe yoga instruction via quantitative Standards and a member-wide Ethical Commitment, which includes an enhanced Code of Conduct, Scope of Practice, and responsibility to equity in yoga; • Advocating for self-regulation in the yoga industry, our community's protection from unfair or unnecessarily burdensome patents, taxation, or government regulation; and universal access to high quality, safe, accessible, and equitable yoga practices; • Serving the member community by providing tools for professional growth and development, exclusive benefits, and timely resources and information including those on COVID-19 and Social Justice; • Fostering accountability within our standards, membership, and internal team; and • Providing yoga schools and yoga teachers with effective business practices to help achieve success.

begin with connection | Yoga Alliance proudly sponsored Loyola Marymount University’s 13th Annual Yoga Day, hosted by the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts Yoga Studies program. As part of the event, we were honored to welcome LMU staff, Yoga Day speakers, community leaders, and Yoga Alliance members to a special community reception at the WalkGood Yard, home of WalkGoodLA in Los Angeles, California. WalkGoodLA, a Black and Brown-led wellness organization based in Los Angeles, creates healing spaces through community yoga classes, guided meditations, hikes, run clubs, and other activations, attracting hundreds of participants weekly. We deeply appreciate everyone who joined us for this memorable evening of connection and inspiration. More yoga, better world.

With each election cycle in the United States, we’re thrust into the unknown. And, no matter where you fall on the political spectrum, one truth remains: the world needs more yoga. More yoga means: + More health in all ways—physical, emotional, mental, social, and biological + More community and connection + More self-reflection and self-understanding Through all of this, we are collectively more capable of: + Creating true equity in more spaces, including those of yoga and wellness + Showing up with more empathy, understanding, and patience in our relationships + Strengthening the endurance needed to fight systems of oppression + Remaining present, intentional, and joyful in our lives This is Yoga Alliance’s “why” – the driving force behind our mission to advocate for yoga in its wholeness—and for every human being in theirs. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, continue to embrace your yoga practice, however it unfolds. More yoga, better world.

Thanks to the support of the Illinois yoga community, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker has signed SB 2872 into law. This new law, Public Act 103-0764, permits school districts to provide at least 20 minutes of “relaxation activities” – specifically including yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, walking, and others – to enhance the mental and physical health of students as part of the school day. This public act could potentially create numerous opportunities for yoga professionals in the Illinois educational system as school districts implement this legislation beginning January 2025. We are currently working alongside educators, yoga professionals and key stakeholders in Illinois to assess these opportunities. If you have any questions, further input, or information regarding yoga in schools or other issues, please share it with us at yaadvocacy@yogaalliance.org.

Now, we are sharing these ideas with you and we want your feedback to shape the future of our credentials, resources, and services together. Click here to take the survey: https://buff.ly/47pGxjH

Today is International Day of Yoga and we recognize the social and cultural nuance of the founding of this day that sometimes stand in direct conflict with the very teachings of the practice. And, yet, International Day of Yoga gives us an opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to bettering the world through yoga -- together. In the spirit of kindness (one of our core values), this International Day of Yoga, we're stepping away from our mats, and stepping into service. Today our team will pause their usual tasks to embrace karma yoga (the path of action without attachment), dedicating their time and talents to causes close to their hearts including participating in @pointofpride's letter-writing campaign. Point of Pride provides financial aid and direct support to trans folks in need of health and wellness care. Since 2016, they have served thousands of people in all 50 states and around the world, distributing 22,000+ handwritten letters in that time to remind trans folks that they are seen, valued, and supported. 88% of recipients are trans young people under the age of 24 who often lack validation and support in their day-to-day lives. Learn more about their work at https://buff.ly/45C7AqQ Whether it's on International Day of Yoga, or in the days ahead, find time to be of service beyond your role as teacher. Remember, no action is ever too small. We believe the more people practice yoga, the better the world will be. #moreyogabetterworld #pridemonth #leadership

You Belong Here. It's Pride Month here in the United States – a month-long celebration of the past, present, and future contributions of the LBTQIA+ community to society and cultures around the world. While there have been significant strides in LGBTQIA+ rights, awareness, and visibility, the journey towards equality continues. Together, we can create and embrace spaces where authenticity thrives – both on and off the mat. To celebrate, we're hosting a special community class on Wednesday, June 26. Stay tuned for more information, and we hope to see you there!
