YOUNGO Climate Peace and Security Working Group

Political Organizations

The working group for #peace and #climate #security for the official #youth constituency of the UNFCCC.

About us

The YOUNGO Climate Peace and Security Working Group focuses on the prevention, preparation, mitigation and adaptation of climate-specific destabilization that directly affects youth populations—from food, water and energy access to supply chain security, forced migration/displacement and human security issues. Youth are disproportionately affected by climate-related security issues around the world. As a result, our work centers around three key pillars: climate-related security threats, climate initiatives as peacebuilding, and sustainability in the defense and space sectors and supply chains. We advocate for the recognition of youth representation in climate diplomacy and youth-led action across these sectors.

GYS Demands - SBSTA 61 Agenda edition While the negotiations increasingly address vulnerabilities, it's crucial to highlight the needs of the most vulnerable communities, such as children and youth, women, Indigenous peoples, and marginalized communities. 🚨 Key Demands from children and youth on SBSTA 61 Agenda: 🌱Protecting Children from Climate-Induced Disasters The Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage highlights the urgent need to safeguard the most vulnerable, especially children, from the impacts of climate change (UNFCCC article 4.1(e) and Paris Agreement article 7.9). As climate-induced disasters increase, we must: - Integrate child-specific protection measures into climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. - Recognize the disproportionate effects on children's mental health and fund research to create effective interventions. - Train mental health providers to support children and vulnerable communities affected by climate disasters. We must ensure children's voices are part of climate action. 🌱Mental Health & Climate Change As climate-induced disasters escalate, their mental health impacts must be addressed. We call on Parties to: - Develop a comprehensive taxonomy of climate-related mental health impacts. - Fund research on the link between climate change and mental health to shape effective policies. - Train healthcare providers to support affected children, youth, and vulnerable communities. A holistic approach to climate action means addressing not just physical damage, but mental and emotional well-being 🌱Health Systems & Climate Resilience To protect communities from climate impacts, we must build resilient healthcare systems. Parties should: - Prioritize climate-sensitive diseases and mental health in disaster management plans. - Equip health systems with tools to manage health risks worsened by climate change. - Establish dedicated funding within the Loss & Damage framework for health disaster management. Let's ensure that health is at the heart of climate resilience strategies! 💚 Check out the full version of the #GlobalYouthStatement here: https://lnkd.in/dKenMAQY #MentalHealthMatters #ClimateResilience #LossAndDamage #ClimateJustice #YouthForClimate #YOUNGO #COP29 #GYS
