I would love to see Kamala Harris wearing color more often. Not because anything is 'wrong' with her style, but because she is FUN. And it's clear to me that she minimizes that side of herself to project STRENGTH. The problem we run into as women when we compartmentalize like that is then people 'just can't put my finger on it, but I just don't trust her.' It's a frustrating double bind, but it can also be liberating. ABSOLUTELY her past as a prosecutor -- especially building her career when she did -- influences her choices of typically conservative and neutral colors. My reasoning for why more color (and this doesn't mean bold, bright, etc., but color has meaning) is to show more of her FULL self. You would notice there would be much less 'I just don't trust her.' AND YET Her look last night to accept the nomination at the DNC was perfection. Because she needed to be perceived as powerful, poised, and present. She did not want ONE thing to take away from her words. She chose BLACK in gorgeous fabrics and a tailored fit to elicit sophistication and poise. CONFIDENCE and ease. With a tie neck blouse to add a bit of soft feminine and flow. But just a bit. And we were hanging on to her every word. Just as she designed it. Style is a powerful tool. It communicates. It creates connection. And it emboldens your presence, purpose and power.
