𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 |#FoodSystems Recently I conducted an in-depth field study on the place-based climate adaptation strategies of smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the objective of exploring how these localized approaches can be digitilized to enhance sustainable food system outcomes in smallholding Agriculture. Farmers’ adaptation strategies are classified into three primary categories: 𝐎𝐧-𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦, 𝐎𝐟𝐟-𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬. The On-farm strategies are further divided into 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑬𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. Off-farm strategies encompass 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒅𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. Indigenous strategies involve using 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒕 𝒘𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒔. These indigenous and Off-farm strategies serve to complement and enhance the On-farm adaptation practices of farmers. 🌊 Tomorrow, on Food, Agriculture and Water Day at #COP29, CLIC and FAO will be co-publishing a new piece of research on the finance gap in the climate transition for global agrifood systems. The report will be launched at a COP29 Presidency event hosted by FAO, The World Bank, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), EBRD, and COP29 Azerbaijan. 🌏 By blending the expertise of Climate Policy Initiative and FAO, the analysis takes an unprecedented, dual approach to estimating climate investment needs for global agrifood systems. The result is a comprehensive picture of the available, estimated, and required funding to transition agrifood systems to low-carbon and climate-resilient pathways. 🥕 The report takes an innovative, systems-based approach to analyzing the investment needs of the agrifood sector. Going beyond the traditional agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU) framework, it encompasses the entire process of agricultural and food production, from farm, to table, to waste. Europe's food and farming systems stand at a crossroads, facing mounting challenges from environmental degradation to geopolitical turmoil. The Strategic Dialogue, initiated by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, brought together 29 key stakeholders from across Europe—farmer unions, consumer group, environmental NGOs, and business leaders—to shape a common vision for the future of agriculture. Over the course of seven months, this diverse group worked to address the pressing challenges facing the sector, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The Strategic Dialogue provides a clear roadmap for the future of European agriculture. Next week, Agriculture Ministers will meet to discuss the future of a "farmer-focused post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy." With the work of the Strategic Dialogue already offering a comprehensive vision, the task for ministers is clear: they need to embrace this plan and take decisive steps to put it into action. The worst thing ministers can do is making superficial changes and continuing to lock farmers into an unsustainable business as usual system. Farmers and society are grappling with serious, interconnected challenges, from the impacts of climate change to ecosystem breakdown, that require bold, transformative policies. Simply tweaking the current system will not be enough. To ensure the resilience of our farming communities and protect the planet for future generations, ministers must commit to the fundamental changes outlined in the Strategic Dialogue. #NoNatureNoFood #EUagriculture #farmersprotests2024 Ariel Brunner

Source: (The Science of the total environment) Study assesses alpine grassland health on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using revised DPSIR framework and ecological security patterns. Ecosystems face threats from human activity and climate change. Most areas maintain high ecological health (75.41%), but northern and southwestern regions show lower health (12.09%) due to livestock density and population. Livestock management is crucial for sustainability and ecosystem connectivity.
