I quickly adapted and dove headfirst into this new sector. Over these years, we've navigated changes - tuition fees, Brexit, reductions in research grants, COVID, and the rise of hybrid work. It’s pretty common, I think, to attend a conference and wish you could be in 2-3 places at once. At #JFFHorizons, I legitimately felt like I could have been in 4-5, maybe more, spots simultaneously and still not have soaked up all the content, meetups, and policy convenings I wanted to take in. That doesn't include the most valuable part of any conference: the scheduled and chance hallway and lobby conversations with old friends, partners, clients, and colleagues. This was my first time at Jobs for the Future (JFF)'s workforce and education summit. Because of travel issues — the IT outage was no joke for Delta — I didn’t get to experience the full breadth of content and meetings I was planning on. But I did pick up on, with fresh eyes and ears, some patterns and themes in the language that the social impact, workforce, and education leaders in attendance were using. Notable terms I heard often in my 1.5 days at the conference: 1️⃣ Skills-first (instead of skills-based). Which suggests that skills-focused hiring and training is the first but not only approach that companies, institutions, and communities should be considering. 2️⃣ Durable skills (also human skills and foundational skills). I didn’t hear one mention of soft skills. Other key terms and themes I heard a lot, through my lens working for a leading labor market analytics firm, Lightcast: ✅ Multiple pathways to connect talent to opportunity (see the skills-first note above) ✅ Outcomes, outcomes, outcomes  ✅ Longitudinal data  ✅ Changing skills and the future of work ✅ AI and digital literacy ✅ Career exploration Lastly, one of my highlights was attending the “No Dead Ends” policy breakfast that featured Maria Flynn interviewing Sen. Kaine and Rep. Smucker. Both were confident WIOA reauthorization could get done by the end of session. But more than this and other legislation nuggets they shared, I was struck by their passion for and roots in CTE, the skilled trades, and non-degree options — all of which will be critical to address the deepening labor deficits we’ll see in coming years. For anyone that doesn’t know, Connor Mason and I officially launched fluid focus from Buenos Aires 🇦🇷 whilst on a career break. Despite the distance, we got our MVP into the hands of c.1K pilot students and young professionals, which included students at the University of London, a large college and a number of leading grammar schools in Northern Ireland. Over those four months that followed, we found time to: ☑️ talk to our users  ☑️ deeply understand the problems we’re tackling  ☑️ expand our marketplace, onboarding c.40 wellness brands  ☑️ deepen our strategic partnerships with academic institutions and businesses Whilst traveling through:  🇨🇱 Chile 🇧🇷 Brazil 🇧🇴 Bolivia  🇲🇽 Mexico  🇨🇴 Colombia 🇬🇹 Guatemala It’s fair to say that our career break quite quickly turned into remote working 😂 And as interest grew, returning to Belfast to run the business full-time became a no-brainer. We now have over 30+ universities and colleges (and counting!) signed up for this academic year. This will give us reach to c.600K students, who we know from our work so far, are in desperate need of support to better manage their relationship with their smartphone and social media. What an incredible evening at the inaugural Tech Mixer! It was fantastic to see familiar faces, forge new connections, and learn from professionals across various industries. Who knew that holding a one-liter stein of "beer" (water, in our case) for over 3 minutes could be such a challenge? Our impromptu Oktoberfest celebration certainly added a unique flavor to the night! A huge thank you to the recruiters from a leading global FinTech company who shared invaluable insights about the current job market. Here are some key takeaways: 1. It's not what you know, but who you know. Internal referrals are golden! 2. AI is now a big player in preliminary screening. Tailor your resume with relevant keywords for each application. 3. Speed matters! Be among the first 100 applicants when possible. 4. Be transparent about salary expectations, and understand the nuances of posted ranges. 5. Flexibility in relocation can give you an edge, especially for roles in major metros. 6. Remember, recruiters are human too. Be patient and empathetic in your follow-ups. The overarching theme?
