Last week the new ISO 59000 family of standards for circular economy was released. It provides frameworks, guidance, supporting tools and metrics that foster, measure and assess an organisation's shift towards a circular economy. We asked, Justin Bonsey our Principal Consultant in the Circular Economy and Lifecycle Thinking team to provide his insights into what this means for organisations. ⬇ After a five-year development pathway with working group members from around the world, the ISO 59000 series represents a global consensus on how any organisation, acting individually or collectively, and located in any jurisdiction, can move away from a linear economy (extract, manufacture, consume and dispose of) towards a circular economy (avoid, repair, reuse and recycle): sharing and maximising value, minimising resource extraction, and staying within planetary limits. Having contributed to the development of Australia’s circular economy standard in the Standards Australia expert working group, Justin believes that Australia will soon follow suit by either adopting ISO 59000 standards outright or adopting its own, which it has been working on since 2018. The new ISO standards coincide with the release of the Australian Government’s first national sustainable procurement policy, which requires government suppliers to meet minimum requirements and demonstrate a commitment to circularity. Edge Impact, with expert teams dedicated to circular economy, supply chain & engagement, carbon, and much more, is already working with organisations to identify opportunities to leverage the new ISO standards to improve environmental outcomes. Our circular economy team specialises in waste baselining, material-specific action plans to optimise resources, lifecycle assessments, behaviour change, and circular strategies and measurement. Reach out to discuss how the new standards fit with your organisation and opportunities to prepare for the future. 📩 info@edgeimpact.global 📞 +61 2 9438 0100 🌐 https://lnkd.in/eik-uU8u . . . #edgeimpact #circulareconomy #sustainability #isostandards

Although the amount of discussions about the circular economy have almost tripled over the past five years, global circularity remains in decline. Some priorities for governments looking to decrease consumption will be setting and enforcing environmental standards for products, reducing taxes on circular products, and tightening producer-responsibility regulations. Further solutions can be found in the Circularity Gap Report 2024 - important information to consider for governments, business, and citizens alike. #sustainability #circulareconomy #climateaction

80% of companies are Green Washing you!!! 80% of companies claim they’re committed to sustainability, but less than 30% are actually implementing circular strategies. That’s a massive disconnect—and businesses can’t afford to ignore it anymore. Many businesses are passionate about making an impact, but turning that passion into practical, sustainable action is a different story. Why the Gap Exists: 🔴Lack of Understanding: Most companies don’t fully grasp what the circular economy means beyond recycling. 🔴Operational Complexities: Implementing circular strategies requires rethinking entire supply chains, production processes, and even business models. Not an easy task. 🔴Short-term ROI focus: Sustainability is a long-term game, but businesses often seek immediate returns, causing reluctance to invest in circular solutions. With SEBI coming up with mandatory #BRSR core KPIs in reporting, each year, the pressure is intensifying to live up to that with claims not meeting the action plan. What Can You Do? 🟢 Start with a Waste Audit: Understand where inefficiencies exist in your current operations. Identify resource leaks and areas for improvement. 🟢Integrate Circular Strategies: Move beyond recycling. Start redesigning your supply chains, creating products that are built to be reused, recycled, or refurbished. This will directly address your BRSR Core KPIs. 🟢Align Your Business for Long-term Sustainability: Invest in circular models now to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and build resilience. The ROI might not be immediate, but the long-term benefits are undeniable. 🟢Prepare for Compliance: Ensure you meet the BRSR Core KPIs by preparing for reasonable assurance requirements. Third-party verification will become increasingly critical, and it’s essential to have your sustainability efforts in place well before deadlines hit. Ready to shift from claims to action? Let’s discuss how circular strategies can help you comply with these regulations, reduce waste, and future-proof your business. #Greenwashing #BRSRCompliance #CircularEconomy #SustainableBusiness #WasteReduction #CorporateSustainability #CircularSupplyChains #BRSRCoreKPIs

ISO guidelines for the circular economy are crucial as they establish standardised terms, measurements, and KPIs, fostering global alignment and facilitating effective implementation. They provide a common language for businesses, governments, and organisations, enabling better communication, benchmarking, and evaluation of circularity efforts. This promotes innovation, collaboration, and progress towards sustainable resource use and waste reduction on a global scale. We now have the following circular economy standards in the ISO family: ISO 59004: Circular economy — Vocabulary, principles and guidance for implementation (The starting point, the main standard that the others refer back to) ISO 59010 Circular economy — Guidance on the transition of business models and value networks (Use for goal setting, strategy building and business models) ISO 59020 Circular economy — Measuring and assessing circularity performance (Standardised methods, KPIs, and tools to measure circularity) _____ And these 2 under development: ISO 59040: Circular economy — Product Circularity Data Sheet (technical standard, provide product circularity data) ISO 59014: Sustainability and traceability - principles and guidance (Provide guidance for traceability and recovery of secondary resources) The circular economy has more than 236 definitions and countless frameworks. Clear guidelines and operating frameworks will help many organisations of all sizes across the globe. https://lnkd.in/gjEhDdfc

Plans for 2024? Make sure you stay on top of what's going on in sustainability, for example. Did you know that this month, for the first time, Chinese steel mills are having to report the carbon footprint of any steel they want to sell in the EU?
