Happy Juneteenth, everyone! 🎉 This is a video I filmed in 2022 that still feels relevant today. While it’s important to recognize Juneteenth as a new federal holiday, we must also acknowledge that a holiday isn’t enough to challenge the deep-rooted structural racism that still exists in our society. Systemic racism affects the lived experiences of marginalized communities every single day. While a federal holiday recognizes the significance of Juneteenth – the day that news of Emancipation reached Black people in Texas in 1865 – there is still considerable work to be done in dismantling the structures that perpetuate inequality in the United States. Let’s use this day as a catalyst for action. 📚Educate yourself about the historical context of Juneteenth and the ongoing fight against structural racism. Check link in bio for resources. 💬 Engage in conversations that challenge and question the status quo. 🎗️Support organizations that are actively working to create a more just and equitable society. 🎙️Advocate for policies that address systemic racism. The struggle for equality goes beyond a single day of celebration. As a storyteller, I’m committed to actively amplifying the voices of those who have been previously marginalized. ✊🌍❤️ #Juneteenth #StructuralRacism #EqualityForAll #Storytellers #Equity

Today we honor Juneteenth. It was on June 19, 1865, when the last Confederate community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, received word that they had been freed from bondage. By Honoring Juneteenth: 🔴 We learn about slavery and its enduring legacy, fostering empathy, awareness, and a commitment to combating racism and inequality. 🔴 We bring people together across racial and cultural lines, commemorating the struggles of the past while working towards a more inclusive and equitable future. 🔴 We honor ancestors, acknowledge past injustices, and heal from intergenerational trauma caused by slavery and systemic racism. Honoring Juneteenth each year helps us foster understanding, empathy, and solidarity across communities. Happy Juneteenth, everyone! Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is celebrated on June 19 to mark the end of slavery in the United States. On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, freeing the last enslaved people in the Confederacy. Complete abolition followed with the ratification of the 13th Amendment on December 6, 1865. This day is a time to reflect on the progress and accomplishments of the Black community. While there is still much work to be done, Juneteenth reminds us that a brighter future is within our reach. Let's continue to support each other and create spaces where racial barriers and systemic racism can be dismantled. This day is especially meaningful as a reminder of our ability to overcome. The legacy of slavery still impacts aspects of life today, and we must challenge our personal biases and internalized racism to break down the barriers that persist. #Juneteenth #Freedom #Equality #BlackCommunity #Progress

As a half-Japanese/half-Irish man, I feel compelled to share why I specifically support Juneteenth. For me, it's not just about celebrating a specific day, although its inclusion in our calendar is a monumental achievement, recognizing the long struggle for freedom and equality and serving as a powerful call to action. We are reminded every day that the hard work of dismantling systemic racism is far from over and, in fact, that progress is being reversed. I feel that if I can make a difference - even to one person - then any effort I contribute is meaningful, and I encourage everyone to give what they can. Just as a single thread may be fragile, but many threads woven together create a strong fabric, our united stand against injustice can form an unbreakable bond and a foundation for lasting change. This allows me to use my voice to challenge not only racism but other forms of harassment and discrimination in our society. As allies, we must speak out against injustice in all its forms and stand in solidarity with marginalized communities. Join me in moving from reflection and quiet support to creating a louder voice for change. What can YOU do to make an impact today - and every day? Together, we can make a difference! #juneteenth #hughesviews #equity #blackhistory

Juneteenth is a significant day in American History. We are honoring the day by continuing to educate ourselves about the true history of slavery, and the lasting impacts of historic and ongoing systemic racism in our country so that we can continue to effectively advocate for a more equitable, just world. Systemic issues which stemmed from slavery and racism like discrimination within our criminal justice system, employment, education, housing, healthcare, etc., perpetuate inequity and hinder social and economic progress of Black Americans today. At Our Children’s Trust we fight for the rights of children and youth to a safe climate, including Black Americans who are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis. We’ll never stop uplifting their voices. #YouthvGov #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #EnvironmentalRacism #EndSystemicRacism

8moThe disconnect you describe is eriely similar to the delay and denial of the truth that existed before slaves in Texas found out that they were "free" two years prior. Let's celebrate 🍾 but ssshhh... don't do it too loudly. Just hand out a holiday and give an old, tireless lady a medal.
