Building Zomato

For cash on delivery orders, finding exact change can sometimes be inconvenient. Starting today, our customers can pay delivery partners in cash, and ask for the balance amount to be added instantly to their Zomato Money account. This balance can be used towards future delivery orders or dining out. Thank you bigbasket.com for the inspiration for this solution, and our delivery partners (three of them are working as product managers with us) for insisting that we develop this asap.

This is the smartest way of holding customer and their cash too ... Like the supermarket guys give chocolate instead of change. Now a days, everyone understand this 'change' trick as nowhere this is going to help any customer. Smartest way of expecting customer to order next time also from your app by holding this 'change'. If you treat this feature as a customer oriented feature, dare to accept the below use case also. Total bill is 530 and customer has only 500. Rest of the 30, try to deduct in next order. If customer is trusting you guys to hold their money in terms of wallet, in return you also need to trust them even if they have less amount than billed amount. Same rule for both the parties. :)

Truly smart! That Rs. 600 now belong to Zomato even though the transaction was of Rs. 530. A good example of future purchase where the category of purchase is known and not the real product. In any case a win-win for Zomato and the customer

You are actually saying : We will pay 800 rs. for a total order value of 710 in case we choose COD. 90 rs. will be in Zomato Wallet ! Honestly saying, I don't even remember how many digital wallets (Mobikwik, Freecharge or many more) are having my money which I never used again. I don't know if this is for customer convenience !

Note to Everyone after this Big Change: That small tip is gone now of the #DeliveryPartner which we used to give to them out of courtesy like take an example: You ordered 4-5 plate #CholeBhature from #Bikanervala and the total is 488Rs or let's say 492Rs and you give him 500rs note and he said I don't have a change so as our habit how we say on small hotels, restaurants, bhaiya chuttey aap rakh lena so now that 12Rs or 8Rs that Delivery Partner could have earned on ordering your Chole Bhature on time or earlier now that's gone. #ThinkAgain #ThinkTwice #ThinkForSomeone #WhyThisNow #WhyThisChange #ThinkAboutDeliveryPartners #ZomatoNewChanges

What I'm about to say might not resonate with everyone, but I have some thoughts on the new payment system. I think the idea of having the remaining change from an order (e.g., paying ₹600 for a ₹530 order) reflect in your app wallet is great for customer retention and repeat orders. However, this system eliminates the opportunity for spontaneous tipping. For instance, I primarily use cash rather than UPI. In my case, if I pay ₹600 and the rider doesn't have ₹20 in change but offers to UPI me the ₹20, I would usually just let them keep it as a tip. Many people do this.  While the idea of adding change to the app wallet is innovative, I'm unsure if it's practical for everyone, especially those who prefer tipping in cash.

Hello Deepinder & Zomato Team, I appreciate the new feature where balance amounts from COD orders are credited to the customer's wallet when the rider doesn't have change. To build on this, I propose a feature allowing customers to use their wallet balance or that change to tip drivers. This tipping option should be visible to both the customer and the driver, encouraging a culture of appreciation for the drivers' hard work. To incentivize this further, you could introduce a reward system. For example, customers who tip a certain amount or a specific number of times could receive a coupon or free delivery on their next order. Similarly, drivers who receive tips frequently or reach a certain tip amount could be rewarded with a free meal or other incentives. This system not only motivates drivers to provide excellent service but also encourages customers to acknowledge and reward their efforts. In the end, it creates a positive experience for both customers and drivers, recognizing the hard work that drivers put in every day. Thank you for considering this idea. Best regards, Sanchit

Hi Deepender, Could you please add a feature to schedule orders in advance? Often, we forget to place our orders ahead of time, and during lunch hours, it can take 30-40 minutes for our food to arrive. Similarly, in the early morning, we sometimes have to wait longer than we'd like for our orders. It would be great if we could place our orders the night before and have them delivered at our desired time the next morning, such as when we wake up ( for ex. morning americano ). Regards.

I thought UPI already solved this problem

This is great idea but can put pressure on the delivery partners as after receiving certain amount of cash from COD orders, they have to necessarily deposit amount from their bank accounts to their zomato driver wallet to ensure their account isn't blocked. I hope you add more ways/checkpoints for drivers to convert the cash they receive now onwards or increase the cash amount limit they can receive in a given day. Else as more people opt for COD after this move, drivers will face challenges.
