Danielle Wiley’s Post

A few weeks ago, I shared that I had made some breakthroughs on cold emailing, and a few of the commenters asked that I share them here. Elisa Camahort Page and Jory Des Jardins of Optionality were kind enough to let me workshop them in a live Zoom setting, and I am finally feeling ready to share. I'll do one part each day this week (with the exception of Thursday, which is reserved for my newsletter). The first step in my four step cold outreach plan is brainstorming. My company has been sending cold emails out since 2016, and this year is the first year we have had a significant level of success. (For reference, I am defining success as getting meetings.) At the start of each meeting that we secure, I ask the folks we are meeting with why they responded to my email. Almost every single one tells us that we hit them at the perfect moment. This isn't luck on our part. When coming up with our cold email plan for 2024, we asked ourselves, "What problem are we regularly solving for our clients?" If you struggle to answer this question, start listening. Ask your current clients why they love working with you. Want more data? LinkedIn and Reddit are both great resources. Find out where your prospective clients are spending their (professional) time online, and listen to what they complain about. Can you solve the issues that plague them? Do you have proof that you can bring the solution (testimonials, case studies, etc.)? Ideally, the problem you can solve is an urgent one or is tied to a moment in time (think holidays). One of the keys to successful outreach is hitting someone at the exact moment that they need your help. Once you have your big idea, you can move on to step two!

Thank YOU Danielle Wiley for sharing your brilliance that day, and I'm glad you are sharing it more broadly. As I said when you presented for the Optionality members, you inspired ideas as you spoke! I took copious notes.

Amazing. I always say the following before my first calls, "You have hundreds of people contacting you, how was I lucky enough to get a chat?" I take those answers right to operations and marketing.
